Many people use astrology as a way of understanding themselves, their careers, and of course, their relationships! So for this article, we're going to explore how Black Moon Lilith can impact love and relationships in astrology. What is Black Moon Lilith?
Black Moon Lilith is the apogee of the Moon, and in the natal chart, this position can show where you have a hidden inner power, how you can become empowered to stand up and speak out, but also where you can struggle with opposition when you do. Black Moon Lilith can also bring mystical energy as one of the astrological witches. In transit, Black Moon Lilith can make you want to stand up in the areas of life ruled by the house it's touring, and can help you become empowered and deal with challenges with aspects.
Natal & Transit Black Moon Lilith & Love
If your natal Black Moon Lilith is in the 5th house (ruling love), the 7th house (ruling relationships), or aspecting your natal Venus (especially the conjunction), Black Moon Lilith can have an impact on your love life and relationships. You may be attracted to Lilith types, and draw people to you who are strong, forceful, their own person, willful. There may be struggles over power in relationships at times, and you likely have to work on being close with those you view and treat as an equal, and who are the same with you, otherwise those power struggles can rage on indefinitely.
When transit Black Moon Lilith is in your natal 5th or 7th houses or aspecting your natal Venus, you can experience a period of time like this, where you're attracting strong, willful people, are behaving more forcefully yourself with others, or where you have opposition from others to face. Deeply embedded relationship issues may come out that you need to face, otherwise more opposition can ensue. You can desire more intensity and passion in your connections with others. Black Moon Lilith & Synastry
Black Moon Lilith in synastry can be an interesting position when it's in play. If someone has a natal planet conjunct your Black Moon Lilith or vice versa, particularly a personal planet (the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, or Mars), and this is a romantic relationship, this can generate some major heat, an intense, emotional, and passionate connection. But it can also bring out a lot of struggles for power, issues of domination and control (though I suppose great if this is a BDSM relationship!). If that can be controlled, it can be a transformative kind of relationship, one that could empower both of you.
In a professional relationship, it would be great channeled into your work so you could fight against the competition together (if you avoid trying to kill each other, anyway). The best kind of relationship would be one where you're focused on a cause together as you could drive one another to take a stand and push your cause even more. In a family relationship, this kind of connection can be most challenging, and this is where the struggles for power and control are most likely to arise. We come out of eclipse season for February, so we're a little less crazed and the energy can feel a little better (hopefully!). What is a new moon?
A new moon occurs when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are in the exact same position in the Zodiac (called a conjunction). New moons are related to beginnings, have high energy, and are enthusiastic.
What is a full moon?
A full moon occurs when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are in the exact opposite positions in the Zodiac (called an opposition). Full moons are related to endings, culminations, and are emotional energy.
Full Moon in Leo: February 9th 2020 (2:33AM ET)
Leo is the sign of love, ruling the heart and matters of the heart, so under a Leo full moon, we can connect more to our hearts. We can be more affectionate, and want more affection in return, and get and give praise and attention. We can be friendlier, more social, and want to connect with the people we love. We have less interest in anything we don't feel connected to with our hearts, and can let the things we're not invested in fall by the wayside. Instead, we want to give everything to the things our heart is fully invested in. It's all about the love!
We may want more time to do the things we love, to be playful and joyful, which may mean we have far less interest in any work or chores. If we don't find it fun, we may lack any and all focus to get things done. So if there is anything that must be done that's "boring", try to make it fun so it does get done. Otherwise it won't! But if there is work and it's work you love, you can pour your heart into it. Leo is a highly creative sign, so this full moon can inspire us creatively. It can be a time to create something great and grand (since Leo doesn't settle for blah!). Let the inspiration push you to take action, and use it to create something you never would have otherwise. As we're coming out of eclipse season this month, let the full moon give you the chance to tend to your heart and not be too serious. The full moon occurs at 20 degrees 0 minutes Leo. The aspects this full moon makes are: Conjunction: 18 degrees 0 minutes - 22 degrees 0 minutes Leo Sextile: 18 degrees 0 minutes - 22 degrees 0 minutes Gemini or Libra Square: 18 degrees 0 minutes - 22 degrees 0 minutes Taurus or Scorpio Trine: 18 degrees 0 minutes - 22 degrees 0 minutes Aries or Sagittarius Opposition: 18 degrees 0 minutes - 22 degrees 0 minutes Aquarius New Moon in Pisces: February 23rd 2020 (10:32AM ET)
February's new moon occurs in sweet Pisces, and we go from tending to the heart and being inspired by love, to connecting to intuition and being guided by our souls. When we take action, it's likely because it "feels" like the right thing to do. The subtle energy all around us can feel more tangible, and we can use this to help us along our path and with our goals.
Pisces is also highly creative, so this month is a great one for creative projects and ventures. While the full moon inspires, the new moon can push for action, but we can take action in a way that is pleasant, not in-your-face, and that doesn't feel so wild. We ebb and flow, and know where to go and how to be. Pisces governs what's hidden, the background, the past, and endings, so we may come to learn something that was unknown to us and sheds light on something important; we may feel more comfortable in the background and set things up as we ready for the energy of the next new moon in Aries; we may think more about the past and feel willing to move on without so much of the baggage weighing us down; and we may finish something important, see something through to the end, and come out of it feeling renewed. This can be a good time to construct boundaries, and to gain some subconscious understanding. This new moon is sextile (positive aspect) 2 signs away) Mars in Capricorn and Uranus in Taurus, and is widely conjunct (aligned with) Mercury retrograde in Pisces. Mars gives this new moon energy to take initiative for what we want, and Uranus gives this new moon independence and a willingness to venture into new territory. Mercury retrograde wants some attention too though, and this can be a great period for a second chance. Retrogrades are times of do-overs, and with a new moon, it's an excellent opportunity to do just that. Think of something you've like another shot at, and see if you can manage it. Personally, this may be focused for you on the areas of life ruled by the house the new moon and Mercury retrograde are in. The new moon occurs at 4 degrees 29 minutes Pisces. The aspects this new moon makes are: Conjunction: 2 degrees 29 minutes - 6 degrees 29 minutes Pisces Sextile: 2 degrees 29 minutes - 6 degrees 29 minutes Taurus or Capricorn Square: 2 degrees 29 minutes - 6 degrees 29 minutes Gemini or Sagittarius Trine: 2 degrees 29 minutes - 6 degrees 29 minutes Cancer or Scorpio Opposition: 2 degrees 29 minutes - 6 degrees 29 minutes Virgo Suggested Reading: The New & Full Moons page for general interpretations by house and aspect It's coming! The first round of Mercury madness, aka Mercury retrograde, descends upon us, starting in February. What can you expect during this retrograde? Read on! The basics - What is Mercury retrograde?
A retrograde occurs when a planet appears to be moving backwards from our vantage point here on Earth. It isn't actually moving backwards, it just appears that way. Mercury turns retrograde most often, about 3-4 times per year, and lasts for several weeks. When a planet retrogrades, what that planet rules tends to be thrown off, along with what the sign it's retrograding in rules.
With Mercury retrograde, we experience a shadow and a storm. The shadow period starts when Mercury first hits the point in the Zodiac it will turn direct at, and ends when it last hits the point in the Zodiac it will turn retrograde at. Most people don't feel the effects of Mercury retrograde until it enters the storm period though. The storm period of Mercury retrograde is when Mercury is moving at its slowest, less than 40 minutes per day. Mercury is a fast-moving planet and hates it when he's moving slowly. There's usually two storm periods, one around the time Mercury turns retrograde, and one around when it turns direct. Mercury Retrograde in Pisces & Aquarius 2020 Dates:
Mercury Retrograde Effects:
The first round of Mercury madness for 2020 descends upon us, starting in water sign Pisces. With Pisces, we can get stuck in the fog, struggle with focus, and feel scattered. Imagination runs strong, and we can get lost in daydreams and fantasies. This is great if you have nothing to focus on, but we always do! So we have to work harder at trying to stay tethered to reality and not get lost in the whimsy.
Pisces is a compassionate sign requiring a gentle touch, and with Mercury retrograde, we can be too sensitive, to easily wounded, and require more boundaries so we're not taken advantage of. Some can lack sensitivity at all and act in cruel ways. Try to have healthy boundaries to protect yourself, but also be mindful of others and what they need. Pisces is a highly intuitive, spiritual sign, so focusing on spiritual pursuits and strengthening your intuition can be a good thing to do during the retrograde in Pisces. When the fog sets in and uncertainty is strong, your intuition can act as a guide. Just make sure what you're listening to is your intuition and not the Devil in disguise! Mercury retrogrades for the last few days in air sign Aquarius, and this is the start of Mercury retrograde impacting the air signs. In Aquarius, we can feel extra rebellious, wanting to push boundaries and try things in new ways. We can crave change and feel restless, making us act impulsively and impatiently. But this does us no good, so try to keep that energy under control and focus it productively. Aquarius rules friends, groups, and the masses, so we can experience issues with any of these. Friends can have a falling out, or old friends can come back; some may leave groups and causes while others pick up old ones and reconnect with old groups; and some may come before the masses and fall while others triumph, some may fade into the crowd, and some crowds may get raucous and need a calming influence. Aquarius is independent and innovative, the inventor and always thinking outside of the box. With Mercury retrograde, we may think a little TOO far outside of the box and need to be more realistic, or we may struggle with unconventional ideas and have to be more open. The Pisces New Moon & Mercury Retrograde
There will be a new moon in Pisces on February 23rd while Mercury is still retrograde in Pisces. It's a little wide for the conjunction (over 4 degrees), but with Mercury retrograde, we may still feel it. New moons with Mercury retrograde tend to be pretty positive, so hopefully this brings positive energy for us. Extra intuition, productive imagination, creative pursuits, feeling sweet and whimsical. Some happy Pisces!
Mercury Retrograde in Pisces & Aquarius 2020 Aspects:
During the retrograde, Mercury will make 4 aspects:
- conjunct the Sun on February 25th (this is the inferior conjunction, a positive point in the retrograde for starting something that can be a focus for the next 6-8 weeks; find where 6 degrees 55 minutes Pisces falls in your chart, and that may be where you can start something) - sextile (positive aspect, two signs away) Mars in Capricorn on February 26th (helping with energy and drive, getting us to take action, and this can be helpful with the new moon) - sextile Uranus in Taurus on February 28th (helping us think about the future, be independent, and work on change) - sextile Venus on March 4th (at the anaretic degree, so this aspect has extra energy but in a pleasant way, and we can focus on relationships, connections, and being diplomatic) Moons of Mercury Retrograde:
With the new moon in Pisces on February 23rd, the Moon is in the same sign as the retrograde during that time, Pisces, February 23rd (1:37AM ET) to February 25th (1:48PM ET). This brings much more focus to the retrograde energy, and we can feel it in a big way. It's a great time to pursue an opportunity for a second chance or do-over, so try that.
The Moon will be in the signs that Mercury naturally rules (Gemini and Virgo) on March 1st (3:21AM ET) to March 4th (12:25AM ET) in Gemini, and then in Virgo March 8th (6:47AM ET) so the retrograde ends with the Moon in Virgo. In Gemini, mental energy can surge, but we can be so much more scattered as Mercury is at the end of Pisces. In Virgo, we can focus on being more practical and getting things done to come out of the retrograde - but may also feel more stressed! Final Notes:
Mercury will be anaretic during this retrograde, which is 29 degrees of any sign. In transit, this is a crisis period where energy is super high, and this can often be a trigger for something. Mercury retrograde will be at 29 degrees Aquarius March 4th - 6th. With Aquarius, there may be something sudden or unexpected that comes about that we have to adjust to, there can be something that happens that impacts a big group of people, or there may be a surge in rebellion.
Mercury will be at a critical degree, which are special degrees of critical energy, February 27th - 28th, at 4 degrees Pisces. Energy can be a bit higher, and we can be a bit more scattered. The retrograde begins at 12 degrees Pisces, so those of you Pisceans born February 28th - March 4th can feel the start of the retrograde most. The retrograde ends at 28 degrees Aquarius, so those of you Aquarians born after February 16th can feel the end of the retrograde most. For the rest of you, check the house(s) Mercury will be retrograding in of your own natal chart, and any aspects Mercury will make during its retrograde to your natal planets, to fully understand how it will impact you personally. You can check out an article I wrote for Astrology Answers outlining all of the retrogrades for 2020 if you want to get ready for all of them too. If you have Mercury retrograde in your natal or progressed chart, you may not feel the worst of this. Those individuals generally don't experience the difficulties of the retrograde because it feels more natural to them. Of course, chances are everyone else around them doesn't have the same aspect, so they can still experience difficulties brought on by others. As we experience eclipses, they bring big energy for new journeys and opportunities with solar eclipses, and emotions and culminations with lunar eclipses. We can make progress and achieve, get recognition and make use of excitement and enthusiasm, and this can play out in a variety of areas of life. How about how eclipses impact love and relationships? Also make sure to sign up for the free mini class, Intro to Love Astrology, to get started with love and relationships in your chart! What is an eclipse?
An eclipse occurs when a new moon or full moon is within 18 1/2 degrees of the Lunar Nodes, which are the points in the Moon's orbit where the Moon crosses the ecliptic. When it's a new moon, we get a solar eclipse, and when it's a full moon, we get a lunar eclipse. Since eclipses occur with new or full moons, their base energy can be similar. BUT eclipses have much more power than new and full moons do!
Eclipses & Love
Solar eclipses can be excellent times for starting something new, so it can be beneficial to start a new relationship, move in together, or get married with solar eclipses. Lunar eclipses are times of endings and culminations, so this can bring emotional next steps (whether happy ones like saying, "I love you" or not-so-happy ones like break ups and divorces).
For you personally, you're most likely to be impacted in your relationships from an eclipse if it occurs in your 5th house of love or 7th house of relationships, is in your Venus sign, or is aspecting your Venus, 5th or 7th house rulers. These are the areas of your natal chart that have direct connection to your relationships and love, so when an eclipse is impacting them, this bring focus on your relationships. When it's making a hard aspect (squares and oppositions), this can bring challenges that have to be worked on, blocks in relationships, and potential breaking apart (more with lunar eclipse than solar eclipses, but it depends on other aspect). When it's making an easy aspect (sextiles and trines), this can bring pleasant energy for dealing with others, and you can feel more comfortable with love and commitment. In general, we can all focus more on love with an eclipse in Leo, sign of love and romance. A solar eclipse in Leo is great for dating and fun romantic ventures, while a lunar eclipse in Leo is great for deeper connections of the heart. We can all focus more on relationships and commitment with an eclipse in Libra, sign of relationships. A solar eclipse in Libra is great for starting new relationships and making new commitments, while a lunar eclipse in Libra is great for strengthening commitments. If an eclipse is conjunct transit (moving) Venus, this can give some focus on love and relationships for all of us as well. The way we connect and come together, what we want and need from others and are willing to give, and the attitude we have toward relationships can get attention. The Intimacy Factor
The 8th house and Pluto are rules of intimacy and sex, so an eclipse in your 8th house or aspecting your natal Pluto can also impact these areas. Solar eclipses in the 8th house or conjunct, sextile or trine your natal Pluto or 8th house ruler can increase your sex drive and open you up to improved intimacy; square or opposite your natal Pluto or 8th house ruler, and you can struggle with being open. Lunar eclipses can impact your sex drive based on how you're feeling emotionally, and you can crave more intensity in your connections with others. Scorpio naturally connects to Pluto and the 8th house, so we can all experience this broadly when an eclipse occurs in Scorpio.

Saturn and Pluto have already been in Capricorn, so Jupiter joins them, and the year kicks off with Saturn and Pluto coming together for the first time in Capricorn on January 12th. Saturn in Astrology
Saturn is a important planet, the disciplinarian and teacher. Saturn brings us our lessons in life, and in the natal chart, the location of your natal Saturn can show the lessons you have to focus on throughout your life, and where you may struggle until later in life. In transit, Saturn can help you to bring stability and make progress when you do things the right way and for the right reasons under the easy aspects (sextiles and trines). Under squares and oppositions, transit Saturn can bring restriction, overwhelm, and lack. With conjunctions, it can go either way, though you often feel the challenging energy first and get to the positive energy later.
Pluto in Astrology
Pluto is a monster of a planet, governing transformations. Pluto is intense, passionate, powerful, dark, and deep. In the natal chart, the location of your natal Pluto can show where you have to transform, dig deeper, evolve, and find your passion, and there may be struggles for power. In transit, Pluto can help you find that power and take control over your life under the easy aspects (sextiles and trines). Under squares and oppositions, transit Pluto can bring incredible struggles for power, take away your control, strip you down and take away everything that isn't truly good for you, and bring the cold, hard truth and unleash the inner demons. With conjunctions, it can go either way, though you often have more room for taking control.
Saturn Conjunct Pluto Astrology
In the natal chart, Saturn conjunct Pluto gives you intense discipline and an incredibly strong will. Saturn conjunct Pluto people are not people who back down, and shouldn't be messed with. Even when they're defeated, they'll find a way to come back bigger, stronger, faster, wiser, unstoppable.
In transit, Saturn conjunct Pluto brings intense grit and determination, stamina and focus, discipline and passion for all of us. This energy needs something to focus on though, otherwise we can become too intense, too disciplined, and hold ourselves back or feel restricted, and lash out or become self-destructive. Saturn-Pluto Conjunction of 2020
The Saturn-Pluto conjunction of 2020 occurs on January 12th 2020 at 11:59AM ET (8:59AM PT), and is at 22 degrees 46 minutes of Capricorn. Mercury and the Sun are also conjunct the two planets (Mercury on the 12th, the Sun on the 13th) at 22 degrees Capricorn, so we've got 4 planets super close together! The Sun shines a light on the energy while Mercury helps with focus and ideas for how to use it.
In Capricorn, this focuses on goals, ambitions, and direction. Work on long-term plans for your goals, do things the right way and for the right reasons so you can make progress, and lay a solid foundation for the rest of the year. Look at things long-term, and take control of your passion. There is very little that we can't do if we put our minds to it under this energy! Focus on the areas of life ruled by the house the conjunction will occur in your natal chart (where 22 degrees Capricorn falls). You can also consider aspects the conjunction will make to your natal and progressed charts. The major aspects are 19 - 25 degrees of: Capricorn - conjunction Scorpio, Pisces - sextiles Aries, Libra - square Taurus, Virgo - trine Cancer - opposition And minor aspects are 21 - 23 degrees of: Sagittarius, Aquarius - semisextile Gemini, Leo - quincunx If the conjunction is making a positive aspect for you (sextile, semisextile, trine), this is a great opportunity for you to make progress, achieve, and feel in control. Make the most of that, for sure! If the conjunction is making a hard aspect for you (square, quincunx, opposition), there may be challenges that you have to meet, blocks you have to overcome, and responsibilities you have to tend to. Do things right, even when it feels incredibly difficult, and you can come out of the energy in better shape. If the conjunction is conjunct anything for you, this is big energy for whatever that planet/point rules! Take control, find power, transform, be disciplined, be focused, make plans. It may feel like really intense, even overwhelming energy, but this may be one of the most important times in your life for that planet/point. Be mindful! Also note that this is the only time Saturn and Pluto will conjunct. Just one hit! Jupiter and Pluto will conjunct 3 times (in April, June, and November). So don't miss this one!
