Mars represents masculine energy in the natal chart (where Venus represents feminine energy), and for men, can show your alter ego (while Venus is the alter ego for women). This can be a different side to yourself that you don’t normally show very much, and tends to come out when you need to channel the “man” within you, and have to be more assertive, aggressive, or confrontational. If your Mars sign is the same as your Sun sign, you can really play up that sign, but the difference for your alter ego comes with the aspects made to your Mars by the other planets, which will likely be different than aspects made to your Sun unless they’re super close together. So, what kind of alter ego do men have by Mars sign? Alter Ego by Mars Sign:
ARIES
This is the sign Mars naturally rules, so you can be at home with your masculine energy, and your alter ego is almost a caveman (you may not be aware of it, but the women in your life probably are!). Your alter ego can take control when it needs to, and depending on your Sun sign, it can be surprising how much of a leader you can be, and you can be quite the fighter in a jam. You have a powerful alter ego that can demand to take control at times. TAURUS Your alter ego is the slow burner. You can really stick with it when you want to, and your alter ego doesn’t want to let go of anything. You can be surprisingly sensual and in touch with your body and nature, and you want a physical connection to life. There are times when your alternate self is very lazy, and doesn’t want to come out and do anything. But when your alternate self does come out, it may not want to go back to being hidden. GEMINI Gemini is the sign of the mind, and your alter ego is one that has a great amount of mental energy. Your mind is your power, and you can talk your way out of jams if you have to. You’d rather talk someone down than physically fight with anyone. Your alternate self loves variety, and doesn’t want to have the same old stuff all of the time, so when it takes over, you’re prone to trying all sorts of different ways to deal with whatever you’re dealing with. CANCER Cancer is the sign of emotions, and your alter ego can have great emotional power and energy. When your emotions kick in, your alter ego takes over, and you can find a lot of inspiration and drive from your feelings. You can take charge in emotional situations, and your assertiveness comes out when you’re defending people you care about, especially family. You’ll fight against anyone who threatens your home or family. LEO Your alter ego is quite the charmer. You can charm your way out of a jam, and as a leader, you lead by making people fall in love with you. When you have to put on a show, your alter ego can come out, wanting attention and the spotlight. Your alter ego can be very warm and generous, with some extra pride but also extra creativity and life. Your alter ego thrives when you’re having fun, doing the things you enjoy most. VIRGO Virgo is a sign that loves lists, structure and order, routine and a plan, so your alter ego takes over when you have work that must be done in a timely fashion, chores that have to get finished, and plans that need to be made. Your alternate self is great with the details and the mundane, but when it comes to being assertive, you can be very nonconfrontational. You’d rather avoid fighting altogether, and focus on the little things. LIBRA Mars in Libra gives you an alter ego that doesn’t want to fight anyone, so when you’re in a jam, you try to reason your way out, convince the other person that fighting isn’t a viable option for a variety of reasons that you explain, and that meeting you in the middle would be much better for everyone. Somehow, you get them to agree. Your alternate self has a charming way with words, and is polite and well-mannered. SCORPIO Mars is the old ruler of Scorpio (before Pluto was known, the modern ruler of Scorpio), so similarly to Aries, you can be at home with your masculine energy, but your alter ego is less of a caveman. Your alternate self has more emotional depth and intensity, so in a jam, you can stare someone down with your penetrating eyes and they’ll freak. When you have to fight, your alter ego wants complete and total destruction for eternity. SAGITTARIUS Sagittarius is the sign of freedom, and your alter ego just wants to be free. Free to roam the Earth, free to have plenty of new experiences, free to focus on anything you want. Your alternate self comes out when you have that opportunity, and wants to take over and lead you to new worlds and realms. In a jam, you try to wiggle your way out deftly, and in a fight, you try to make a joke out of it before and after you throw down. CAPRICORN Your alter ego tends to come out when you’re focused on a goal, an ambition, and your direction. This alter ego wants to go places, meet important people, and accomplish something. Your alternate self doesn’t want to waste its time with fighting, and tends to avoid messy emotions. In a jam, you try to think of a practical solution to problems. You’ll only fight if it’ll make you look better than you already do, or to defend your image. AQUARIUS Aquarius is an unconventional sign, and so your alter ego is pretty unconventional. Men with Mars in Aquarius tend to not be masculine in a traditional sense at all (unless you were surrounded by super weird people growing up, then you’re more traditional), and your alter ego can be downright weird. Your alternate self wants to push the envelope and try out the unusual, so in a jam, you find some odd ways out that no one else would think of. PISCES Pisces doesn’t want to fight anyone, and Mars in Pisces can give you an alter ego that wants to connect with others emotionally, as well as tune in to the subtle energies of the world. Your alternate self has incredible intuition, and can be a mystic or healer. In a jam, you listen to your gut. hen dealing with confrontation, you appeal to the person’s better self. You lead by inspiring people and showing them what we’re capable of if we open our hearts and souls. Suggested Reading: Mars & Love Astrology While life can be chaotic and wild and spur of the moment a lot, there are also many times when we need to create a routine to stick to so you can get the regular, mundane stuff done. It may be the stuff we don’t care much about or want to do, but it has to be done anyway. How can astrology help you create a routine to stick with? Virgo is the sign that rules routines, and so you want to check where Virgo is in your chart to see where you best create a routine. Virgo planets & routine:
If you have any planets in Virgo, this can influence your ability to create routines, for better or for worse. The Sun shows you’re good at it in general, and the Moon shows you can use a routine to keep yourself emotionally stable.
Mercury shows you prefer shorter routines and changing things up regularly, Venus shows you you can enjoy routines but can also be lazy with them, and Mars shows you have a lot of energy for routines and thrive with them. Jupiter shows routines can be beneficial for you but need freedom within them, Saturn shows you can feel a little restrained by routines, Uranus shows you want unusual routines, Neptune shows you want creative routines, and Pluto shows you can use routines to take control. If you have multiple planets in Virgo, you may be super into routines! You may feel you're at your best when you're sticking to a schedule and have everything organized and ready to go. Virgo houses & routine:
We all have a Virgo house, so even if you don’t have a Virgo planet, you can look at your houses. The areas of life ruled by that house can show the areas of life where you most need a routine to keep everything in order. By house:
1st house: rules the self, so routines can come more naturally, and you likely use routines routinely (ha!) 2nd house: house of money, so routines may be needed when dealing with your finances 3rd house: house of the mind, so routines may be needed for dealing with any mental work 4th house: house of home/family, so routines may be needed for home and family matters 5th house: house of love, so you may use routines in your love relationships or with creative ventures and hobbies 6th house: this is the Virgo house, so you can take a natural approach to routines, especially in your work 7th house: house of relationships, so you may use routines in your relationships and dealings with others 8th house: this is an intense house, so routines for you can be focused on serious matters and help you transform 9th house: this is a light house, so routines for you may be focused on learning, travel, or expansion 10th house: house of goals, so you may use routines to pursue your goals and ambitions and stay on track 11th house: house of friends and dreams, so you may use routines when dealing with groups or pursuing your dreams in an orderly way 12th house: house of the hidden, so you may use routines on your own, in the background, when no one is watching Suggested Reading: The 6th House page for 6th house interpretations The basics: A retrograde occurs when a planet appears to be moving backwards from our vantage point here on Earth. It isn't actually moving backwards, it just appears that way. Mercury turns retrograde most often because it's nearest to us, about 3-4 times per year, and lasts for several weeks. When a planet retrogrades, what that planet rules tends to be thrown off, along with what the sign it's retrograding in rules. With Mercury retrograde, we experience a shadow and a storm. The shadow period starts when Mercury first hits the point in the zodiac it will turn direct at, and ends when it last hits the point in the zodiac it will turn retrograde at. Most people don't feel the effects of Mercury retrograde until it enters the storm period though. The storm period of Mercury retrograde is when Mercury is moving at its slowest, less than 40 minutes per day. Mercury is a fast-moving planet and hates it when he's moving slowly. There's usually two storm periods, one around the time Mercury turns retrograde, and one around when it turns direct. The shadow of this Mercury retrograde begins August 28th and ends October 24th. The exact retrograde begins September 17th at 2:09PM ET and ends October 9th at 10:57AM ET. The first storm period is from September 10th - 24th, and the second storm period is from October 6th - 14th. This Mercury retrograde occurs entirely in air sign Libra, who’s getting kind of beat up by the Universe right now as we come out of Venus retrograde, Libra’s ruler, September 6th and then go right into Mercury retrograde in your sign. Sorry Libra! (I say that as a Libra too!) Libra rules relationships, and Venus rules relationships, so we’re in the middle of some major relationship energy since July and through mid-October. Everyone has to evaluate their relationships and what’s working, what isn’t, who stays, who goes. We see the continuation of breakups, critical relationship energy, and people having a hard time getting along. We can see lots of fights and misunderstandings and people just don’t want to be tactful, diplomatic, or treating people well. Libra rules justice, so we can see issues related to justice come to the forefront (as if they haven’t been already). It can be more obvious, more important to us, and we want to work on having more equality, fairness, and respect. Though we may not act very civil at times! We can be more uncompromising with Mercury retrograde in Libra, lack harmony and peace around us, and can see people in general as well as governing bodies being less-than-nice to each other. Though it is a good time to pick peace talks back up that have fallen by the wayside. Libra is vacillating, and so we can be more indecisive; Libra is superficial, and so we can care less about what’s underneath; Libra is easily unbalanced, and so we can find ourselves feeling completely out of whack. There are a few interesting things going on with this retrograde. The way it starts and the way it ends is probably going to be pretty wild. The beginning of this retrograde will be square (hard aspect) Pluto in Capricorn, which can incite some major rage, some major struggles over power and control, and we can get along the least at the onset of this retrograde. Then to end the retrograde, Mercury will be at 0 degrees Libra, called the Zero Degrees Aries Point, which is a point of critical energy. Astrologer Celeste Teal calls it a "spectacular out rush of energies... and involvement with the world at large". With this in Libra, it’s about how we are with one another, how we interact and relate and connect, and we have even more focus on our relationships to end this retrograde. This Mercury retrograde makes 2 major aspects while in retrograde, a square to Pluto on September 24th (which we feel in orb at the start of the retrograde through the 25th), and a sextile (easy aspect) to Saturn on October 6th. The sextile to Saturn can help us get a little discipline and focus during the wonky retrograde, a brief time to get some clarity before the retrograde ends a few days later. An extra note: Venus retrograde ends on September 6th at 14 degrees Leo, and Mercury retrograde begins September 17th at 15 degrees Libra, which means if you have any planets or points between 13 and 16 degrees, it will be impacted by BOTH the end of the Venus retrograde AND beginning of the Mercury retrograde, and there will be a lot of energy and focus on that planet/point during the first half of September. The turn retrograde begins at 15 degrees Libra, so those of you Libras born October 8th - 10th may feel the turn retrograde most. The turn direct occurs at 0 degrees Libra, so those of you Libras born before September 25th may feel the turn direct most. Another extra note: If you have any planets or house cusps at 0 degrees Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn, the end of this retrograde will trigger the Aries Point energy in your chart, so pay special attention to it! For the rest of you, check the house(s) Mercury will be retrograding in of your own natal chart, and any aspects Mercury will make during its retrograde to your natal planets, to fully understand how it will impact you personally. If you have Mercury retrograde in your natal or progressed chart, you may not feel the worst of this. Those individuals generally don't experience the difficulties of the retrograde because it feels more natural to them. Of course, chances are everyone else around them doesn't have the same aspect, so they can still experience difficulties brought on by others.
