Another character analysis! This time I'll dive into Mr. Ichabod Crane, the hapless bloke from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I always loved this story, and the show Sleepy Hollow debuts its second season tonight (*heart*), so I thought this would make a good post. This story was written by Washington Irving, and published back in 1820. Still popular after almost 200 years - not too shabby! I'm basing this analysis on the book version of Ichabod, not the TV one. Wanna read it for yourself? You can online HERE. Ichabod Crane's Sun, Mercury & Saturn
Ichabod Crane comes to Sleepy Hollow to teach, and teachers fall under the signs of Taurus, Gemini, and Sagittarius. Given the descriptions of Ichabod, how he's quite sociable (though I always pictured him as a popular nerd), gets along very well with the kids, loves stories and interested in the supernatural, I gravitate toward Gemini.
Gemini rules lower education of the younger children (instead of higher education with Sagittarius), and loves stories too. He seems to get along with everyone, which is very air sign, and has an active mind, so I put his Sun and Mercury conjunct in Gemini. He's also described as "carrying the whole budget of local gossip from house to house, so that his appearance was always greeted with satisfaction." Very Gemini! Plus, he has this child-like curiosity about the world, as Gemini does. Also, his physical description of being kind of lanky would go more toward Gemini than the other two signs. When Saturn is linked with Mercury (often in harsh aspect, oddly), that usually shows someone who loves reading and books, which Ichabod does, so perhaps his Saturn is conjunct, semisquare, square, sesquiquadrate, or opposite his Mercury. He's also a disciplinarian, but careful in how he carries it out, which speaks to Saturn. Ichabod Crane's Moon & Venus
Ichabod has a crazy appetite, adoring food, and has a desire for luxury, which seems to be the driving force behind his going after Katrina (who doesn't want to marry rich? lol). This brings me to Taurus, which loves luxury, material things, and hello, who loves food more than Taurus? No one.
I like his Moon and Venus conjunct in Taurus because it amplifies his appetite for food and wealth, and it also keeps him in a pretty agreeable mood. He doesn't seem to get all that high or low, is pleasant company, and is charming in his own way. Taurus would give him that stick-to-it-iveness that he shows when he's pursuing Katrina, and how he's not deterred by his rival Brom Bones (even though he should've been). Plus, the combo of Taurus and Gemini for his personal planets shows someone who always has to fill the air with words. Oh, and Taurus rules singing, which Ichabod is known for. Ichabod Crane's Mars & Lunar Nodes
Ichabod, as much as I love him, does not come across as much of a manly man, so I'm staying away from any of those kinds of Mars positions (Aries, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn).
Pisces would make a lot of sense because of his active imagination - when he's out at night in Sleepy Hollow, he swears he sees all sorts of crazy things. Delusions, illusions, so Pisces. Ichabod is also said to believe in the supernatural, which is governed by Pisces. This would give him lots of mutable energy (Gemini and Pisces are mutable signs), and keeps him from being in-your-face (cardinal signs) or practical (fixed signs). Ichabod is said to be tall and lanky, and I thought of the Lunar Nodes with this. The closer your North Node is to the Ascendent (1st house cusp), the taller you are (or appear to be). I'd put his North Node in the 1st house near his Ascendent. I haven't chosen a Rising sign for him though, but I'd guess an air sign, Virgo, or Pisces. Asteroids: Hermes & the Muses
I feel like these asteroids would be prominent for Ichabod. Throughout the story, it's mentioned many times how much Ichabod sings.
Hermes is an asteroid ruling music, and the asteroid Muses could show a lot of different things with him: Calliope, the muse of epic poetry and Erato, the muse of love poetry and mimicry, because in his belongings they find poetry he's tried to write for Katrina; Terpsichore, the muse of dancing, and he likes to dance; Euterpe, the muse of music; and Melpomene, the muse of tragic storytelling. In the end, no one knows what happened to Ichabod, though some say he lived on and did other things, and that Brom Bones had something to do with scaring him away. As for the Headless Horseman, he was said to be a fighter who lost his head in the war, and sticks around to find his head. I'd guess a combo of Aries (rules the head and war), Scorpio (the other sign that rules war but is more ruthless), and Cancer (rules the home, and clinginess), and probably a harsh Sun/Mars/Saturn/Uranus combo (losing his head!). Suggested Reading: Character Analysis: Astrology of Dracula The basics: A retrograde occurs when a planet appears to be moving backwards from our vantage point here on Earth. It isn't actually moving backwards, it just appears that way. Mercury turns retrograde most often because it's nearest to us, about 3-4 times per year, and lasts for several weeks. When a planet retrogrades, what that planet rules tends to be thrown off, along with what the sign it's retrograding in rules. With Mercury retrograde, we experience a shadow and a storm. The shadow period starts when Mercury first hits the point in the zodiac it will turn direct at, and ends when it last hits the point in the zodiac it will turn retrograde at. Most people don't feel the effects of Mercury retrograde until it enters the storm period though. The storm period of Mercury retrograde is when Mercury is moving at its slowest, less than 40 minutes per day. Mercury is a fast-moving planet and hates it when he's moving slowly. There's usually two storm periods, one around the time Mercury turns retrograde, and one around when it turns direct. The shadow of this Mercury retrograde begins September 14th and ends November 10th. The exact retrograde begins October 4th at 1:02PM ET and ends October 25th at 3:17PM ET. The first storm period is September 28th - October 10th, and the second storm period is October 22nd - 30th. This retrograde begins in water sign Scorpio. This will be the last retrograde in a water sign for a few years, so cheer up water signs! In Scorpio, we can see problems with transformations and other people’s money. Transformations can mean things like sex or death, so these things could have a problem at the start of this retrograde. We can see the return of former lovers, seem morbid or focused on the dark side of life, and either have a hard time being serious, or are way too serious and need to get bopped upside the head. We’re overly emotional (since water signs rule our emotions), and we’re moody to the extreme, going from one extreme emotion to the next like it’s nothing and normal. Not nothing, not normal! Mercury will retrograde backward into air sign Libra on October 10th at 1:26PM ET, so he won’t be retrograde in Scorpio for very long. The time around the 10th is the most important since Mercury will be at the beginning of one sign and the end of another, so the energy is amplified, and we can really see people fighting (or even war kind of fighting) around this time. Libra rules committed relationships, so we can simultaneously see relationships falling apart like that (*snap of the fingers*), and people reunite that we didn’t think would (or should). For those who break up, communication is likely the culprit, and since it’s during a retrograde, the break up may not be permanent, so don’t do anything drastic (like drive their car off a cliff). For those who get back together, you remember all of the things you loved about each other, but since it’s during a retrograde, the reunion may not be permanent, so don’t do anything drastic (like buy a wedding dress). Libra also rules fairness, equality, justice, compromise, diplomacy - all of that goes out the window. We’re fighting like cats and dogs, and don’t want to give an inch, let alone a mile. We can say the wrong things at the wrong times to the wrong people, and are less than tactful. This could especially be the case when Mercury conjuncts (is in the same spot as) transit (moving) Venus on October 17th, and we can stick out foots in our mouths like crazy, or try to kiss and make up, even just temporarily. The one good thing about this retrograde is Mercury doesn’t make any difficult aspects during its course, so phew for that - but not so fast. The end of this retrograde will be opposite the lunar eclipse occurring October 8th in Aries, so we could see some wackiness from that toward the end of the retrograde. And the start of this retrograde will be conjunct the solar eclipse occurring October 23rd, but that could make things a little easier at the start. Getting out guards down so it can rip our hearts out! The turn retrograde begins at 2 degrees Scorpio, so those of you Scorpions born October 27th and earlier may feel the turn retrograde most. The turn direct occurs at 16 degrees Libra, so those of you Librans born October 8th - 11th may feel the turn direct most. For the rest of you, check the house(s) Mercury will be retrograding in of your own natal chart, and any aspects Mercury will make during its retrograde to your natal planets, to fully understand how it will impact you personally. If you have Mercury retrograde in your natal or progressed chart, you may not feel the worst of this. Those individuals generally don't experience the difficulties of the retrograde because it feels more natural to them. Of course, chances are everyone else around them doesn't have the same aspect, so they can still experience difficulties brought on by others. ARIES SEPTEMBER 2014 Mercury enters air sign Libra, the sign opposite yours, on September 2nd, and you do your best thinking when you have a partner by your side to help you, guide you, offer you advice, and point out what you miss. You like the support someone else provides you with your ideas, and it gives you greater confidence. You’re more willing to make compromises, and can see the other side to the story. Mercury leaves Libra and moves into water sign Scorpio on September 27th, and you become more intense, focus on serious matters and subjects, and are more researching. You can be a little obsessive, and when something interests you, you have unrelenting focus. You can have a conversation or get advice regarding other people’s money (taxes, debts, loans, inheritances, joint finances), or make plans for a transformation of some sort. General horoscopes are always meant for entertainment purposes only. For a more accurate view, read your Sun sign, Rising sign, and Moon sign.
ARIES September is about relationships and commitment for you, Aries. Mercury, the Sun, and Venus enter your relationship sector, and a new moon on the 24th occurs in this sector. You can commit yourself more fully to your partner, if in a relationship, and bring it to the next level. If single, you focus on having a serious relationship, and don’t want to date all willy-nilly. Having someone special to share your life with is important for you now, and you don’t want to bring a lackadaisical approach to finding someone. General horoscopes are always meant for entertainment purposes only. For a more accurate view, read your Sun sign, Rising sign, and Moon sign.
ARIES Venus is in your work sector for most of the month, and this helps you get more work done when you put your mind to it and focus on working. The problem is, it makes you so lazy that you don’t even get started with work, so you might be even less productive if you don’t force yourself to move. The Sun is in this sector until the 22nd, so you can shine and be recognized for your work if you focus. The 21st might not be a good day for work though, with your ruler harshly hitting Neptune and zapping your concentration. There are tons of asteroids out there that are just people's names, so there’s a very good chance there is an asteroid of your name. Go through the list of asteroids on astro.com, and see if any of them are of your name. It can be your first, middle, or last name, a nickname, or something close to your name. Then see what the asteroid is doing in your own natal chart. The Asteroid of Your Name = Alternate Sun
I like to think that the asteroid of your name is like an alternate Sun for you. The sign and house location in your natal chart of the asteroid of your name can feel very personal to you, like your natal Sun does, and can be a part of your personality (like the Sun). Same with aspects the asteroid of your name makes to the other natal planets.
Anything conjunct the asteroid of your name can be especially important, similarly to if they were conjunct your natal Sun. This may explain why something is strong for you even though it’s not seen via the natal planets by themselves. Asteroids of your name can also figure in relationship astrology analysis, and there are usually links with people in your life. You can look to see if your asteroid is prominent in the charts of those you're close to. For example, in my brother's chart, his asteroid Nicole (my name) is conjunct his Moon - I always was a bit of a mother to him! You’ll often find that close family members, friends, romantic partners, and business connections will have a link via the asteroids of your name. This can be shown in your own natal chart, in their natal chart, in the composite chart between you, or in synastry (the way your charts interact with one another). The Asteroid of Your Name in Transit
In transit, where the asteroid of your name is located and the aspects it makes can show events in your life and where your focus is. I track the aspects the asteroid of my name makes to my natal planets, houses, and the transit planets, as well as transit aspects by the other transit planets to the natal asteroid of my name, just like I track the rest of the transit planets aspecting my chart.
I view it similar to the impact of the transit Sun, and the transit asteroid of your name shines a light on whatever the natal planet or house or transit planet being impacted rules. Transit aspects by the transit planets to your natal asteroid of your name can feel a lot like transit aspects to your natal Sun. On the day that I first got obsessed with asteroids, asteroid Nicole (my name) was sitting on my 3rd house cusp, the house of learning. How astrological! To find where your asteroid is currently located you can use astro.com (go to Extended Chart Selection, then click on Ephemeris, and type the number for your asteroid in the Manual entry box of the Additional objects section and generate an ephemeris).
