On May 6th, a new moon occurs in Taurus at 3:30PM ET. This new moon in Taurus encourages us to slow down, take a moment, and let everything sink in. April came with a lot of energy that we’re still reeling from, and some time to slow it all down and take it all in can be a good thing. We can benefit from a slow, steady approach, and we can take our time with decisions and actions. No need to rush, just take your time . . . This new moon in Taurus occurs at the same time that Mercury is retrograde (appearing to move backward) in Taurus, though the new moon isn’t conjunct (aligned with), so it’s more like casting some light on the retrograde rather than bringing full-focus on the retrograde troubles. The new moon can help us to focus on what we want to focus on in the middle of the madness, and get things going. Taurus is ruler of money, so this can be a good time to improve our money situations that the Mercury retrograde has been messing with. Improve your sense of safety and security, especially in the physical sense, and focus on how you can make things better in your life in a tangible way. The new moon is trine (positive aspect, four signs away) from transit (moving) Pluto in fellow earth sign Capricorn, so we can have the chance to take control, get some of the power back that’s been stripped away by the retrogrades, and make some changes that may need to be made to make things better. We all want to feel better! And since we all want to feel better, we may be indulging a lot more too. Where’s the cupcakes? This new moon occurs at 16 degrees 41 minutes Taurus. The aspects to this new moon are: Conjunction: 14 degrees 41 minutes - 18 degrees 41 minutes Taurus Sextile: 14 degrees 41 minutes - 18 degrees 41 minutes Cancer or Pisces Square: 14 degrees 41 minutes - 18 degrees 41 minutes Leo or Aquarius Trine: 14 degrees 41 minutes - 18 degrees 41 minutes Virgo or Capricorn Opposition: 14 degrees 41 minutes - 18 degrees 41 minutes Scorpio The full moon in May occurs on May 21st at 5:14PM ET in fire sign Sagittarius. We can be more emotional when it comes to our beliefs and our way of life, and we may think we’re being open, but we’re not, at least not as much as we think. This full moon is conjunct transit Mars, who is retrograde at the end of Sagittarius for this full moon. Uh oh! This full moon can stimulate some difficult energy with the Mars retrograde, and we can have a lot more arguments and fighting over what we think and believe. Things are hot enough during the Mars retrograde, but extra emotional energy gets infused into it with this full moon. We all need to remember that cooler heads prevail, and a positive outlet for our feelings may be necessary. This full moon is also the first in Sagittarius; the full moon in June will also be in Sagittarius. So we can see something situations starting with this full moon that don’t fully culminate until the next one in June. That June one will be full of hot energy too because while Mars will no longer be retrograde in Sagittarius, the full moon will occur at a sensitive point. So this riled up, on edge energy continues . . . Sagittarius is one of the signs that rules travel (especially air travel) and learning (higher learning like colleges and universities), so we could see something pop up with either. And the soaring rhetoric with nothing to back it up? That can either get way worse or get punched in the mouth. This full moon occurs at 1 degree 13 minutes Sagittarius. The aspects for this full moon are: Conjunction: 0 degrees 0 minutes - 3 degrees 13 minutes Sagittarius Sextile: 0 degrees 0 minutes - 3 degrees 13 minutes Libra or Aquarius Square: 0 degrees 0 minutes - 3 degrees 13 minutes Virgo or Pisces Trine: 0 degrees 0 minutes - 3 degrees 13 minutes Aries or Leo Opposition: 0 degrees 0 minutes - 3 degrees 13 minutes Gemini Note: Since this full moon occurs so early in Sagittarius, you may feel the impact of it if you have any planets or points later than 29 degrees 13 minutes of Scorpio (conjunction), Virgo or Capricorn (sextile), Leo or Aquarius (square), Cancer or Pisces (trine), or Taurus (opposition). Aries: Financial issues can be a drain on your this month with Mercury retrograde for most of May in your money sector. You can focus on ways to make improvements, and may feel like you’re constantly trying to catch up, but if there are blocks to stability, you need to work on them now. The new moon in your money sector on the 6th may provide you with an opportunity, or at least the chance, to make things better for yourself and your life. The basics: A retrograde occurs when a planet appears to be moving backwards from our vantage point here on Earth. It isn't actually moving backwards, it just appears that way. Mercury turns retrograde most often because it's nearest to us, about 3-4 times per year, and lasts for several weeks. When a planet retrogrades, what that planet rules tends to be thrown off, along with what the sign it's retrograding in rules. With Mercury retrograde, we experience a shadow and a storm. The shadow period starts when Mercury first hits the point in the zodiac it will turn direct at, and ends when it last hits the point in the zodiac it will turn retrograde at. Most people don't feel the effects of Mercury retrograde until it enters the storm period though. The storm period of Mercury retrograde is when Mercury is moving at its slowest, less than 40 minutes per day. Mercury is a fast-moving planet and hates it when he's moving slowly. There's usually two storm periods, one around the time Mercury turns retrograde, and one around when it turns direct. The shadow period for this Mercury retrograde starts April 14th and ends June 7th. This Mercury retrograde begins April 28th at 1:20PM ET and ends May 22nd at 9:20PM ET. Normally, we have two storm periods for Mercury retrograde, one at the start and one at the end with a break in the middle, but this time, we’ll have one long storm period from April 22nd - June 1st. No break - sorry! It’s Mercury madness time! This entire retrograde occurs in earth sign Taurus. This can make us waaaaay lazier and more indulgent - so very Taurus! We have a hard time getting anything done at all. Taurus can take a while to get started, and with the retrograde, we just may not start at all. We can think it, but that alone takes away all of our energy. Then we need a nap! Taurus rules money, so we may have some financial issues with this retrograde. We can see prominent financial scandals or financial secrets coming out that floor us, and individually, we have to focus on having a better handle on money. It is what makes the world go round, after all (anyone who says love does is kidding themselves). Taurus rules stability and security, so with Mercury retrograde in this sign, that can go out the window, and everything seems far more unstable and we’re far more insecure. On the flip side, things can be so stable that we’re bored out of our minds and want to change things up pronto, but can’t for some reason, or it goes very wrong when we try. And Taurus also rules stubbornness, which always seems to be at all-time highs when Mercury retrogrades in this sign. Immovable object meets immovable object and no one is budging, even if it means getting slammed by something else! Mercury makes 3 major aspects while retrograde, the first being a conjunction (in the same spot) to the Sun on May 9th. This is usually a good time to get something started for the next 1-2 months, but try to focus on something you want a second chance with. Mercury trines (positive aspect) Pluto in fellow earth sign Capricorn on May 12th, and we can take control, make some positive transformations, or find out something that’s been hidden to us. Mercury conjuncts Venus on May 13th, and we can feel good, but with Venus being the natural ruler of Taurus, that energy can be amplified too. The retrograde ends trine (positive aspect) Jupiter in fellow earth sign Virgo, so we can end the retrograde with some positive energy on our side, and we can be more optimistic. The main problem with this Mercury retrograde is that Mars will also be retrograde at the same time. Egads, double madness!!! So we’re going to have double the trouble, in many respects. Mars will be retrograde in Sagittarius at the same time Mercury is retrograde in Taurus, and with both being rulers of beliefs (Taurus rules our value systems, Sagittarius rules our religious beliefs), we may see a lot more going on with terrorism with these retrogrades. And we’ll all need to be much more open to differing beliefs, otherwise we get into it bad. The miscommunications of Mercury retrograde lead to all-out fights with Mars retrograde. Keep your cool, and find an outlet. The turn retrograde begins at 23 degrees Taurus, so those of you Taureans born May 2nd - 7th may feel the start of the retrograde most. The turn direct occurs at 14 degrees Taurus, so those of you Taureans born May 12th - 15th may feel the end of the retrograde most. For the rest of you, check the house(s) Mercury will be retrograding in of your own natal chart, and any aspects Mercury will make during its retrograde to your natal planets, to fully understand how it will impact you personally. If you have Mercury retrograde in your natal or progressed chart, you may not feel the worst of this. Those individuals generally don't experience the difficulties of the retrograde because it feels more natural to them. Of course, chances are everyone else around them doesn't have the same aspect, so they can still experience difficulties brought on by others. Suggested Reading: The Mercury, Venus and Mars Retrogrades page for general interpretations The basics: A retrograde occurs when a planet appears to be moving backward from our view here on Earth. It isn’t actually moving backward, it just appears that way because of the way the planets move in relation to one another. Mars retrograde once every 2 years or so for about 2 ½ months at a time. The last Mars retrograde we had was in early 2014. And so Mars madness begins!!! And Mars madness, unlike Mercury madness (aka Mercury retrograde) has the capability to *really* make us mad. Scalding hot, fiery balls of flames, rip the world to shreds MAD! Mars rules assertiveness, on the positive side, which on the negative side means aggression, and we tend to get a LOT of that during Mars retrograde. Everyone is on edge and ready to snap if you just look at them funny. Or just look at them period. Or just exist. We usually see an increase in violence when Mars is retrograde, and we all need to work on getting a grip on our anger. The more locked up anger, rage, hatred, hostility, and frustrations you have, the more likely you are to snap during Mars retrograde. The solution? Don’t bottle things up! That’s rarely a good thing, and Mars retrograde serves to uncork us when we’ve refused to uncork ourselves. (an aside, when you see or hear the word “cork”, how many of you think of that SNL skit with Janet Jackson from back in the day?) Anywho, Mars retrograde begins on April 17th at 8:14AM ET in Sagittarius, so Sagittarius-related stuff gets the brunt of the madness at the start of the retrograde. Sagittarius is a travel sign, so we can see more accidents, especially involving planes (Sagittarius rules air travel). We can also see things disrupting travel (like weather events), or some sort of scandal involving the travel industry. Sagittarius is one of the communication signs, so we can have a harder time with communication, especially when it comes to big ideas, big promises, big talk. Talking the talk, but not walking the walk? That seems quite big right now, especially in the U.S. (not naming names, just pointing fingers, since you can’t see my fingers). Sagittarius is a fire sign, which ain’t so good with Mars, the fiery planet, so we’re extra fiery. Sagittarius tries to look at the bright side, but we may be unrealistic about it, and when things don’t turn out roses, we can lose it in a big way. We may find that we’re constantly at odds over our beliefs as well, since Sagittarius is a ruler of beliefs (Taurus rules our values, Pisces rules our spiritual beliefs, Sagittarius rules religious beliefs). Soo this probably won’t be so great of a time for terrorism. Though since the world has stunk bad at fighting terrorism, maybe that’ll reverse and it’ll go better? Let’s do that Sagittarius looking-at-the-bright-side thing! Honesty is ruled by Sagittarius, and while it’s usually the best policy, it may cause a lot of fighting during Mars retrograde. Conversely, we can finally see the truth revealed while Mars is retrograde in Sagittarius with some things we’ve felt we haven’t been told the truth about. But will we be happy with the truth when it’s out? And Sagittarius rules the law, so we can also see some big legal developments at this time. I’ve been worried about the Supreme Court getting by missing one justice, and I wonder how this retrograde may impact the nominee, Merrick Garland (who officially has one of my new favorite names, it sounds like he‘s a wizard). It all falls apart, or comes together? Mars in Sagittarius will play right into the mutable t-square we have going on right now with Jupiter in mutable sign Virgo opposite Neptune in mutable sign Pisces and both square (hard aspect, 3 signs away) Saturn in mutable sign Sagittarius. Mars will be joining Saturn in Sagittarius, who is the squared planet and gets all of the energy funneled to it in a t-square. Add in Mars retrograde, and that energy is going to be so riled up! We all need to be more mindful, more careful, more considerate, more measured, more practical. This energy will be strongest at the onset of the retrograde since it begins square Neptune (and we’re extra delusional at the onset too). Mars does not spend his entire retrograde in Sagittarius. On May 27th at 9:51AM ET, Mars will retrograde backward into water sign Scorpio. If you think we’re mad with Mars in Sagittarius, just wait until Mars in Scorpio! Scorpio used to be ruled by Mars before Pluto came along, and is a darker side of Mars. Scorpio rules rage, hatred, jealousy, revenge. Now, we won’t have to deal with Mars heating up the mutable t-square anymore, which is very good, but anger is still a big, big problem. This will likely especially be the case right around when Mars goes into Scorpio since he’ll be anaretic, at the very last degree of Scorpio, which is a highly charged position. Whenever a planet retrogrades over the anaretic degree, bad things tend to happen, so I would watch for a triggered event around then. A couple things Scorpio rules that can be impacted while Mars is retrograde in Scorpio: transformations (includes sex - a sex scandal? - and death - an important person dies? - and pregnancy), other people’s money (taxes, debts, loans, inheritances, joint finances, stocks - perhaps some sort of stock meltdown or financial crisis somewhere) Mars retrograde will end June 29th at 7:38PM in Scorpio. The end may be a bit wonky with Mars quincunx (hard aspect) Uranus in Aries, the sign naturally ruled by Mars. Quincunxes are erratic energy, Uranus is changeable, so it might seem like a lot of stuff is going haywire or is difficult to get a grip on. Mars retrograde starts at 8 degrees Sagittarius, which is close to the 9 degrees Sagittarius Saturn retrograde will end at in August, so if you have anything in your chart getting hit at the start of Mars retrograde, it’ll be hit again in August (and if it’s a mutable sign, it’ll also be hit by the solar eclipse September 1st). Mars retrograde ends at 23 degrees Scorpio, and the April/May Mercury retrograde starts at 23 degrees Taurus, the sign opposite, so these also stimulate the same parts of your chart. A lot of repetition going on! Check the house(s) Mars will retrograde in your chart and any aspects he’ll make so you can understand how the retrograde will impact you. If you have Mars retrograde in your natal or progressed chart, you may be exempt from the worst. This tends to protect you because the energy is more natural to you, and you can feel more comfortable with the retrograde energy, especially if you were born with it. You can still have problems though, because not everyone around you has this, so difficulties can be brought on by others.
