We have different ways of categorizing the Zodiac signs, houses, planets, and other bodies, and one of them is by element. Astrology has 4 elements: fire, earth, air, and water. But what does it mean if you're missing one of those elements in your natal chart? The Elements in Astrology
Astrology has 4 elements, which each have 3 Zodiac signs. They are:
Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces Each element has its own base energy. The fire signs are active and take action; the earth signs are practical and responsible; the air signs are intellectual and social; and the water signs are emotional and intuitive. If none of your planets fall in the signs of one element, that element is missing in your natal chart. This is often seen if you have a stellium (3+ planets in one Zodiac sign). If only one planet is located in the signs of an element, that's called a singleton (and the energy of the element gets funneled into it hard). What Missing the Elements Mean in Astrology
Missing fire: You may struggle with taking initiative, being assertive, focusing on the positives, or taking chances on yourself. You may have difficulty having the energy you need for what you want in life.
Missing earth: You may struggle with being stable, secure, reliable, or responsible. You may not seem very practical, and may need to work on trying to be more grounded and more connected to the physical. Missing air: You may struggle with using your mind, with being curious, or with being sociable. You may have to work harder at expressing yourself, feeling heard, or connecting with others mentally. Missing water: You may struggle with emotional expression, understand yourself emotionally, or connecting with others emotionally. You may need to work on allowing yourself to be emotional. What to Do When You're Missing an Element
There is some belief that if you have the missing element represented on one of your angles, that pumps up the angle and you get to focus the energy of that element there. There are 4 angles in astrology, and each correspond to one of the main pillars of your life:
Ascendant = the self (associated with 1st house) Imum Coeli = home/family (associated with 4th house) Descendant = others/relationships (associated with 7th house) Midheaven = career/goals (associated with 10th house) So, say you have no planets in any of the air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), but you do have your Descendant in Aquarius. That would channel air energy in your dealings with others and relationships (so you'd be super sociable, attract tons of air people, and need lots of mental connection in relationships). But what about if you don't even have that? That doesn't mean you're missing the element completely, because you still have the planets. So, if you're missing fire, look to your natal Mars, who is the fiery planet. Look to the sign and house location your natal Mars, and that's where you'll likely find fire energy is focused for you. If you're missing earth, look to your natal Saturn, whoo is super earth. Look to the sign and house location of your natal Saturn, and there's where you'll likely find earth energy is focused for you. If you're missing air, look to your natal Mercury, the planet of the mind. Look to the sign and house location of your natal Mercury, and that's where you'll likely find air energy is focused for you. If you're missing water, look to your natal Moon, the watery emotional planet. Look to the sign and house location of your natal Moon, and that's where you'll likely find water energy is focused for you. ARIES 2021 HOROSCOPE Aries 2021 Love & Relationships Horoscope Mars activates each of your relationship areas in 2021, so it might feel like a more eventful year for you to take action in love. Mars first tours your love sector mid-June through July 2021, and this can be a great time for affection, dating, and romance. If single, you can be open to meeting different people and keeping your options open. If in a relationship, you can bring the spark back. There are certain positions that are more important than others, and one of those is the anaretic degree. There are certain events more important than others, and one of those is retrogrades. Put them together? Oh, you're cooking up something big astrologically! What does anaretic mean in astrology?
The anaretic degree is 29 degrees of any sign. There are 30 degrees in each sign, and the 29th degree is the very last degree. With the transit (moving) planets at this degree, it's crisis energy.
When you have natal planets at this degree, they tend to be the strongest in your natal chart, and you underpay or overplay them (usually the former) to your detriment until you work out whatever blocks are associated with it (then it can become your greatest asset). What does retrograde mean in astrology?
A planet of body is called retrograde when it appears to be moving backward through the Zodiac from our view here on Earth; it isn't actually moving backward, it just appears that way.
Normal motion is forward, so when a planet is retrograde, it operates differently. The Sun and Moon don't retrograde; Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Chiron retrograde for months at a time every year. The retrogrades of Mercury, Venus, and Mars tend to be a lot bigger, both in transit and in the natal chart. In transit, we can all get thrown off with whatever they're touching in your natal charts, and when you're born with them in your natal chart, that can be your greatest challenge (but like the anaretic degree, once you work it out, it can be your greatest asset). Anaretic Retrograde Transit Planets
When a transit planet is retrograde and comes to the anaretic degree, it usually means it's gone backward from the sign ahead to now the sign it's anaretic in. Whenever a transit planet retrogrades over the anaretic degree, it's usually a significant trigger from developments in the world at large, as well as for us personally.
In the world at large, this tends to focus on the planet that's at this position and the sign it's in. When Mercury is retrograde and anaretic, this can set off bad news and fighting. When Venus is retrograde and anaretic, this can screw with diplomacy and alliances. When Mars is retrograde and anaretic, this can stir major violence. When Ceres is retrograde and anaretic, this can cause challenges with having enough nourishment and support for those who need it. When Jupiter is retrograde and anaretic, this can create legal issues and problems with global connections. When Saturn is retrograde and anaretic, there can be problems with authority, governing, or the Earth. When Uranus is retrograde and anaretic, unrest and rebellion can break out. When Neptune is retrograde and anaretic, empathy and compassion may be challenged, and there can be water issues. When Pluto is retrograde and anaretic, this can expose major secrets, corruption, and stir struggles for power. When Chiron is retrograde and anaretic, there may be great wounding and health challenges. On a personal level, you tend to feel this in the areas of life ruled by the house the retrograde anaretic planet is located, and with any aspects it makes to your natal chart. Anaretic Retrograde Natal Planets
When a planet is retrograde and anaretic when you were born, it's anaretic and retrograde in your natal chart. A natal chart is your blueprint for your life and personality, so this planet is a part of who you are and the life you live - for better or worse!
When it's Mercury, expressing yourself openly and feeling understand may be the challenge of your life; yet you have potential to be an incredible communicator, even public speaker. When it's Venus, connecting with others in healthy relationships and developing solid self-confidence may seem elusive, but when you get it, you can seem like an inspiration. When it's Mars, you may avoid going for what you want and taking a chance on yourself, but once you develop a belief in yourself and find inner courage, you can be unstoppable. When it's Ceres, feeling nurtured and supported may be lacking in a big way growing up, but you can work through it to become the supreme nurturer. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and Chiron may not be as strong as the other 4, but can still have some impact. It may connect to your ability to expand, explore, and be open to opportunity for Jupiter; to being disciplined or your responsibilities and goals for Saturn; to being true to your individuality and independence for Uranus; to taking care of your spiritual needs for Neptune; to your personal power for Pluto; or to your personal healing for Chiron. The Basics - What is Mercury retrograde?
A retrograde occurs when a planet appears to be moving backwards from our vantage point here on Earth. It isn't actually moving backwards, it just appears that way. Mercury turns retrograde most often, about 3-4 times per year, and lasts for several weeks. When a planet retrogrades, what that planet rules tends to be thrown off, along with what the sign it's retrograding in rules.
With Mercury retrograde, we experience a shadow and a storm. The shadow period starts when Mercury first hits the point in the Zodiac it will turn direct at, and ends when it last hits the point in the Zodiac it will turn retrograde at. Most people don't feel the effects of Mercury retrograde until it enters the storm period though. The storm period of Mercury retrograde is when Mercury is moving at its slowest, less than 40 minutes per day. Mercury is a fast-moving planet and hates it when it's moving slowly. There's usually two storm periods, one around the time Mercury turns retrograde, and one around when it turns direct Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius & Capricorn 2022 Key Dates:
Mercury Retrograde Effects:
The first Mercury retrograde for 2022 hits us fast, and it starts in air sign Aquarius. This is the last for a few years in Aquarius, so we may be wrapping up some of the challenges with Aquarius we've had in the last few years. Issues and blocks related to your dreams for your future, your ability to be true to yourself, your ability to connect with like-minded people, or to step outside of your comfort zone can get one last push now.
We can feel more rebellious, restless, impatient, and impulsive, and this can lead to rash, hasty decisions and actions that get us in trouble, so we do need to be smarter and think things through. Must have a plan! Aquarius does like us to do things differently, so it can be a good time to think about the different ways you can go about the routine and mundane. It may be helpful to try the small stuff first. This can also be good for reconnecting with friends, old groups you used to belong to, or pick back up old causes you used to be passionate about in healthy, positive ways. Mercury goes back into Capricorn on January 25th, and we may have extra responsibilities to manage, more restrictions and limitations to work through, and we may question our goals and direction. Aquarius might have us questioning our future, and Capricorn makes us question the path we're on. So this likely isn't a great time for confidence in where we're going in life! But we usually have to avoid making any major changes now with that, unless it's something we've already been planning for a while. Jumping at changing what we're working on may prove problematic later. This can be a good time to reconnect with old bosses, mentors, and authority figures, though it may bring out issues with existing bosses, mentors, and authority figures. We may have less patience for everything weighing on us and all of the pressure by others, and need to find some space without being irresponsible. Uranus Direct + Mercury Retrograde:
Uranus ends its retrograde 4 days after the Mercury retrograde begins. It may feel like we're being pulled in different directions, some things are going forward while others are moving back, and this can be a bit difficult to deal with. Much may just feel like it's on hold, we're at a standstill, and we just don't know what to do.
They also both square one another with both happening at 10 degrees (Aquarius for Mercury, Taurus for Uranus), so our focus may be scattered, difficult to control, and we likely crave change and want things to be different, but it may not be the best time for hasty actions. It could potentially be good for getting out of a rut you've been stuck in for a while, but maybe only if you've already given a lot of thought as to how to get out of it! You're more likely to feel this personally if you have any planets or bodies at 8-12 degrees of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius & Capricorn 2022 Aspects:
During the retrograde, Mercury will only make 2 major aspects to the other transit (moving) planets. They are:
- Conjunct the Sun on January 23rd 2022 @ 3 degrees Aquarius: This is the Inferior Conjunction, a positive point in the retrograde for starting something that can be a focus for the next 6-8 weeks; find where it falls in your chart, and that may be where you can start something. - Conjunct Pluto on January 28th 2022 @ 26 degrees Capricorn: This kicks up the passionate, intense energy of Pluto, and the retrograde ends conjunct Pluto; Venus retrograde also started December 19th 2021 conjunct Pluto, so it's interesting how this ties in; we may potentially see related developments in mid-December and late-January/early February because of this; it's great energy for research and getting to the heart of matters and transforming, but it's intense so it definitely needs a healthy positive outlet. The Moons of Mercury Retrograde:
The Moon travels through both signs Mercury naturally rules as well as Capricorn during this retrograde (not Aquarius while Mercury is in Aquarius though). The retrograde starts with the Moon already in Gemini (ruled by Mercury) as of January 12th (10:08PM ET/7:08PM PT) until January 15th (11:11AM ET/8:11AM PT), which can increase scattered, unfocused energy and a need for a mental outlet.
The Moon is in Virgo (ruled by Mercury) January 20th (9:03AM ET/6:03AM PT) to January 22nd (5:03PM ET/2:03PM PT), which can increase anxiousness and stress, and we need to take better care of ourselves. The Moon is in the same sign as the retrograde in Capricorn on January 29th (4:09AM ET/1:09AM PT) to January 31st :4:42AM ET/1:42AM PT). This can bring a lot more emotional focus to the retrograde, and may especially amplify the conjunction to Pluto Final Notes:
This retrograde will be at the anaretic degree when it goes back to Capricorn, January 25th - 26th, so it's short but can be strong. The anaretic degree is crisis energy in transit, so this may trigger some important events and developments, and energy may run high. With Capricorn, this may focus on your goals, governments, or corporations, involve responsibilities or authority figures, and we may feel generally more overwhelmed and restricted. Likely need some space!
The retrograde starts at 10 degrees Aquarius, so those of you Aquarius born January 27th to February 1st may feel the start of the retrograde most. The retrograde ends at 24 degrees Capricorn, so those of you Capricorn born January 12th to 17th may feel the end of the retrograde most. For the rest of you, check the house(s) Mercury will be retrograding in your own natal chart, and any aspects Mercury will make during its retrograde to your natal planets, to fully understand how it will impact you personally. If you have Mercury retrograde in your natal or progressed chart, you may not feel the worst of this. Those individuals generally don't experience the difficulties of the retrograde because it feels more natural to them. Of course, chances are everyone else around them doesn't have the same aspect, so they can still experience difficulties brought on by others. Suggested Reading: The Mercury, Venus, & Mars Retrogrades page for interpretations It's almost a new year! And with January comes a new moon in Capricorn and a full moon in Cancer. What is a New Moon?
A new moon occurs when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are in the exact same position in the Zodiac (called a conjunction). New moons are related to beginnings, have high energy, and are enthusiastic.
What is a Full Moon?
A full moon occurs when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are in the exact opposite positions in the Zodiac (called an opposition). Full moons are related to endings, culminations, and are emotional energy.
New Moon in Capricorn: January 2nd 2022 (1:33PM ET/10:33AM PT)
The first new moon for 2022 hits is quickly, coming on the 2nd in Capricorn. Capricorn rules our goals and direction, so it's a perfect new moon to have right at the start of a new year! We're giving more attention to our resolutions, and want to at least try to get on the right path to having some success in 2022.
We may focus on opportunities that help us get on the right path, achieve some success quickly, and those who have already been working hard and smart toward their goals may see some progress made now. Some may feel they're hitting high points or hitting their stride in some way. It's not all good though - this new moon comes with Venus retrograde in Capricorn, though it isn't actually conjunct (aligned with it), thankfully. Opportunities may be second chances, and we may prefer a do-over. The new moon is trine (positive aspect, 4 signs away) Uranus in Taurus, so we may be feeling like stepping outside of our comfort zones just a tiny bit, finding different ways to do what's always been done, or finding new ways to improve discipline and focus. The new moon occurs at 12 degrees 20 minutes Capricorn. The aspects to this new moon are: Conjunction: 10 degrees 20 minutes - 14 degrees 20 minutes Capricorn Sextile: 10 degrees 20 minutes - 14 degrees 20 minutes Scorpio or Pisces Square: 10 degrees 20 minutes - 14 degrees 20 minutes Aries or Libra Trine: 10 degrees 20 minutes - 14 degrees 20 minutes Taurus or Virgo Opposition: 10 degrees 20 minutes - 14 degrees 20 minutes Cancer Full Moon in Cancer: January 17th 2022 (6:49PM ET/3:49PM PT)
Our first full moon in 2022 comes to us in Cancer, the water sign that is naturally ruled by the Moon, so we can be much more in tune with what we're feeling and guided by emotions. Sometimes this can make us too subjective though, and we have to work harder to get outside of our own bubbles.
Cancer full moons usually make us more emotional, more sensitive, and we need a lot more comfort and support. We want to spend more time with the people we know best, stay in our comfort zones, and do the things that give us some emotional comfort. Be supportive and let yourself get support in return. Cancer is the internal foundation, the very base and bottom, so we may need to work on improving internal foundations within ourselves, or with whatever projects or goals we may be working on. Strengthen the base, and you have a solid start. This full moon is opposite transit Pluto in Capricorn, and it may kick up some fights over power and control, and energy can be intense at times. This comes in the middle of Venus retrograde starting December 2021 conjunct Pluto, and Mercury retrograde ending February 2022 conjunct Pluto. Pluto is getting activated, and this can be a strong period for transforming, taking control, and finding personal power if you can avoid getting sucked into the heavy drama. But, we do need to be a little cognizant of potential for extra violence in the world thanks to Pluto. The full moon occurs at 27 degrees 51 minutes Cancer. The aspects to this full moon are: Conjunction: 25 degrees 51 minutes - 29 degrees 51 minutes Cancer Sextile: 5 degrees 51 minutes - 29 degrees 51 minutes Taurus or Virgo Square: 5 degrees 51 minutes - 29 degrees 51 minutes Aries or Libra Trine: 5 degrees 51 minutes - 29 degrees 51 minutes Scorpio or Pisces Opposition: 5 degrees 51 minutes - 29 degrees 51 minutes Capricorn Suggested Reading: The New & Full Moons page for general interpretations When a planet is retrograde when you're born, that planet is retrograde in your natal chart, and can have an impact on your personality and life. When it's Mercury, Venus, or Mars retrograde, that tends to be a *really* big impact! Venus is the planet of love, relationships, but also rules your values, what you take pleasure in, and your approach to money. So, this planet is pretty important for big matters in your life, and when you have this planet retrograde in your natal chart, that can be tricky. What is a retrograde?
A planet is called retrograde when it appears to be moving backward in the Zodiac when you were born; it's not actually moving backward, and just appears that way.
The normal motion for planets is forward, so the retrograde planet operates a little differently. In the case of Venus, a lot differently! Often, a retrograde Venus operates in the sign that is opposite the sign it's actually located. You almost reject the sign it's in, in favor of its opposite. But you have to learn to embrace the sign of your Venus, otherwise you usually have problems all your life with love, relationships, money, values, ethics, and confidence. (btw, this is also often true for natal Mercury and Mars) So, the opposing signs are: Aries - Libra Taurus - Scorpio Gemini - Sagittarius Cancer - Capricorn Leo - Aquarius Virgo - Pisces It'll also manifest the opposing house from where it's located, however this article will just cover the signs for now, but for your reference, the opposing houses are: 1st - 7th 2nd - 8th 3rd - 9th 4th - 10th 5th - 11th 6th - 12th So, let's say your natal Venus retrograde is in Libra and the 4th house, that means you likely operate as if it's in Aries and the 10th house. Say your natal retrograde Venus is in Aquarius and the 9th house, you likely operate as if it's in Leo and the 3rd house. The biggest issue is that not only do you tend to operate as if it's in the opposing sign and house, but you also tend to play up the negatives of that opposing sign and house. Every sign and house has higher (positive) and lower (negative) energy and potential uses, but your natal Venus retrograde gets pulled to the negative. Natal Venus Retrograde in the Zodiac Signs:
Natal Venus Retrograde in Aries:
Your Venus may operate more like extreme Libra, so instead of being more independent and take initiative for yourself, you may look to others to do that for you quite a bit. You may struggle with being alone, and always find yourself with someone or dependent on someone else. You need to learn how to rely on yourself and not look to others to fulfill your physical, mental, or financial needs. Natal Venus Retrograde in Taurus: Your Venus may operate more like extreme Scorpio, so instead of playing the calm and collected one, you're a bit more extreme and intense. You may be a bit obsessive in love and have difficulty letting go of anyone. You may share too much with others, and not have enough for yourself at times. You need to find the calm center within, and make yourself more of a priority. Natal Venus Retrograde in Gemini: Your Venus may operate more like extreme Sagittarius, so you may keep people at arm's length, always demanding lots of space, and run pretty easily when it seems like others want to get closer to you. You may be a risk-taker financially, but don't actually think it through fully. You need to learn how to connect on a smaller scale and not be afraid of everyday connections, and think things through better. Natal Venus Retrograde in Cancer: Your Venus may operate more like extreme Capricorn, so you may keep your feelings to yourself and not really let others in. You may take care of everyone else, but leave yourself depleted and uncared for. It can be extra hard for you to ask for help. You may give more attention to the external than the internal, wanting to avoid the internal. You need to learn how to embrace your emotions, let yourself feel and connect emotionally, and develop a support system you can rely on. Natal Venus Retrograde in Leo: Your Venus may operate more like extreme Aquarius, so you may surround yourself with lots of people but rarely let anyone really get to know you in a personal way. You may be more detached and afraid of exposing your heart. You may seem above it all even when it's killing you. You need to learn to make your heart a bigger priority, and let it lead you more in life so you can forge closer connections. Natal Venus Retrograde in Virgo: Your Venus may operate more like extreme Pisces, so you might make too many sacrifices for others, and it can be way too easy for you to stay quiet and let everyone else walk all over you. You may be very insecure and feel like you deserve that, and are way too hard on yourself. You need to work on self-worth and see yourself as a separate entity that doesn't have to get lost in others, pay more attention to yourself, cut yourself a break, and take better care of yourself. Natal Venus Retrograde in Libra: Your Venus may operate more like extreme Aries, so instead of being very open with others and to commitment, you can run away from it. You may display loud independence, but are really just scared of losing yourself. You need to learn how to balance focus on the self with others, and be comfortable with healthy commitment. Natal Venus Retrograde in Scorpio: Your Venus may operate more like extreme Taurus, so instead of intimate connections, you may prioritize casual ones and sexual flings over anything lasting. You may focus on keeping more for yourself, and have difficulty giving to others, perhaps worried you won't have enough. You need to work through whatever may have given the fear of intimacy, and learn that sharing enhances your life, not steals from it. Natal Venus Retrograde in Sagittarius: Your Venus may operate more like extreme Gemini, so you may like to get to know everything you can about others, and get a little too invested. You may be great at surface-level conversation, but struggle beyond that. You may try to keep your world and thinking small, afraid of what broadening it would do or mean. You need to work on the blocks to opening up your life, expanding and evolving, and get beyond the surface. Natal Venus Retrograde in Capricorn: Your Venus may operate more like extreme Cancer, so you may get too emotionally invested, operate too subjectively with others, or try to avoid external responsibilities and just tend to your own personal needs. You may not be comfortable with asserting your goals or working to build anything for yourself, and instead only want to build for others. You need to embrace ambition and become comfortable with building for yourself. Natal Venus Retrograde in Aquarius: Your Venus may operate more like extreme Leo, so instead of a comfortable distance, you may get clingy and way too personal. You may struggle with anything casual, and may fall in love way too easily and way too fast, confuse other emotions or situations with love, and have a hard time with being alone. You need to learn how to be in a relationship with yourself and not be so quick to give your heart away or look externally for validation. Natal Venus Retrograde in Pisces: Your Venus may operate more like extreme Virgo, so you may be way too picky, have such high demands that neither you nor anyone else can live up to, and may find yourself constantly disappointed. You may do lots of work and pay lots of attention with others, but tend to keep your thoughts and feelings to yourself. You need to open up to more spiritual connections with others, and let things go and flow more without so many expectations. One last note:
Venus retrograde in your natal chart often means you have some trauma or baggage associated with it. It may be from your early life, or past lives/karmic, but it's pretty much a definite that something is there.
Working through that block, that issue, that baggage, or whatever it is, helps you to start to feel comfortable with your natal Venus retrograde sign and house location so you're not running away from it anymore. But, the issues are often deeply embedded in your subconscious, and we may not even realize it's there. Being more honest with ourselves, our life experiences, and being more in tune with our innermost selves can go a long way. And once you do unlock your Venus retrograde and actually use it the right way, it can be a huge asset for you. Good luck with your natal Venus retrograde!
