I published an article on Lilith some time ago that has been super popular, yet it's very basic, so I decided to write another article going into Lilith more since it seems many are interested in this position. So let's dive in! Who is Lilith?
To understand Lilith, you need to understand the mythology. Lilith was the original woman in the Garden of Eden, Adam's first wife. She didn't want to be sexually submissive, so she was cast out and replaced by Eve. Since Eve was made from Adam, she had to be submissive. No surprise she ate that apple from the Tree of Knowledge - she couldn't think for herself!
So basically, Adam was a dumbass, not very woke and super self-entitled (at least that's what we can think now!). Poor Eve had no chance being made from said dumbass. Of course she was going to eat that apple. If Adam hadn't been an idiot and kept Lilith around, that wouldn't have happened. I feel like the whole point of the story has been missed for so many centuries. It's been used as a way to show women are too stupid to think for themselves, but what it REALLY shows is that when a woman isn't allowed to think for herself, it all goes to Hell (literally). Eve wasn't allowed to be able to think for herself because she was made from Adam. She was designed that way. But Lilith wasn't! So of course Lilith stood up to Adam. She had no dumbass in her DNA! What does Black Moon Lilith represent in astrology?1 - Lilith is sexually independent.
In astrology, Black Moon Lilith represents a variety of things. You'll quite often see Black Moon Lilith tied to sexual desires. This is from the part of the mythology where Lilith pushed back from not wanting to be sexually submissive, as well as some myths that show her as a succubus (sex demon).
Really, Lilith is a sexually independent position astrologically. While having a prominent Black Moon Lilith can make you a more sexual person, it's not necessarily in the same way as say, Eros (asteroid of sex) or Pluto (ruler of sexuality). It's not having a super sex drive, it's not wanting to have lots of sexual partners, it's not being super sexually intense (depending on other placements, anyway). It's more of a, this is what I know I want and I don't want to be made to do anything I don't want, kind of thing. It can give a certain amount of sexual confidence and assertiveness. Remember, Lilith knew what she wanted (to be equal) and didn't want to be forced into what she didn't want (to be sexually submissive). This can also play out not just sexually, but with the areas of life ruled by the house and sign your natal Lilith is located. With these areas, you may know what you want and what you don't, and don't want to be forced into anything. 2 - Lilith is a difficult mother.
In practice, I've seen prominent and challenged natal Black Moon Lilith's also tend to have, shall we say, difficult relationships with their mothers. What happened to Lilith after being cast out varies in myths, but one of the most common is that she went nuts and killed babies (they sure had some very negative views of women!).
I think it's really just representing the challenging relationship with the mother. Some of us have wonderful mothers and we love them to pieces; and some of us have Mommy Dearest. With challenged Black Moon Lilith, it tends to be abusive, dominating, controlling mother energy (rather than distant, neglectful, more Saturn stuff). There can also be a degree of your mother feeling threatened by you or competing with you (as Lilith was ousted and another replaced her). 3 - Lilith is a witch.
Black Moon Lilith is also one of the witches in astrology. Apparently in the old texts, Lilith translates to night hag (which is derived from the Old English word meaning witch), so having a strong Lilith can show you're someone with strong mystical energy.
Like Adam, Lilith was made from the Earth, so Lilith may give strong connections to the Earth, giving you access to the natural powers of the Earth. This energy can be scary when you're not ready for it, still need to mature, and are in challenging environments. But it's part of what can give you a great deal of power in life. 4 - Lilith is power.
Which brings me to my favorite astrological representation for Lilith - a hidden inner power within us all that gives us the ability to stand up for ourselves, to speak up, and to not be quiet. Not be submissive. Not be ignored!
This is often found by the sign and house placement in your natal chart of your Black Moon Lilith. For those with a strong Black Moon Lilith in the natal chart, you may end up having to undergo some of the Lilith transformation in your life before you can access the power (refusing to be forced to do what you don't want, fleeing from situations, being isolated, living with the anger/grief/fear, and then emerging). Embrace your inner Lilith!
