Third House Astrology & Your Natal Chart
Most astrology charts have 12 houses, and each rule different parts of life. Your natal chart is a snapshot of the locations of the planets, other bodies, and 12 houses in the Zodiac at the moment you're born and from the location you're born at. Your natal houses each rule different parts of your life and personality.
The third house is naturally ruled by Mercury, the planet of the mind. Mercury is a busy planet who moves fast through the Zodiac, and wants to be on its toes. Mercury doesn't like things to be stale, and finds that really boring.
At-a-Glance Third House Keywords:
Third House in Astrology: Internal Communication
The third house is, first and foremost, a house of communication. It can show how you best use your mind, your communication style, whether you struggle with communication or not, and your outlook.
The third house is how you say what you need to say, how you converse, and how you mentally connect and open up (or don't).
This is also a social house, and how we communicate and connect in social environments can also be shown here.
Third House in Astrology: Immediate Environment
The third house rules your immediate environment, so the environment you're in all of the time, day-to-day or regularly. It can show what that environment looks like, what you'd ideally want it to be like, and how you connect to it.
This house governs your neighborhood and community, your neighbors and community members, and how you connect with them.
Third House in Astrology: Learning
Since the third house rules communication and is ruled by Mercury, it also rules learning, but your primary learning in your younger years, not advanced learning and expertise. It can show how you are in your younger years when it comes to learning, how you learn and your approach to learning.
Third House in Astrology: Young People
The third house rules people younger than yourself, so it connects to the young people in your life. The exception is your children, which are ruled by the fifth house. But nieces and nephews, students, children of friends, etc. are all under the third house.
Third House in Astrology: Variety
The third house loves variety, and this house wants to keep things interesting, and variety is one of them. This house can show where we need variety, with what or how, and how we feel about variety.
Third House in Astrology: Alike Connections
The third house rules alike connections, so siblings, cousins, basically the familiar connections that are of your generation, your grouping, or like you. It's funny because this house does rule variety, but also these similar connections.
Third House in Astrology: Active
The third house is a highly active house. Since it connects to the mind, it wants business, and since it connects to variety, it wants to try lots of things. It can show how you're busy, how you're active, and what you need to be busy with.
Where Your Third House Energy is Found
For everyone, look to the Zodiac sign your third house falls in. The areas of life ruled by that sign are where you communicate, keep busy, need variety, and engage. Also look to the natural planetary ruler of your third house (the natural planetary ruler of the Zodiac sign your third house falls in) as this can also connect to the 3rd house energy.
If you have any natal planets in your third house, this can make the third house energy a lot stronger for you. That planet can strongly connect with your communication and learning styles, and where you focus your mind.
Transit (moving) planets touring your third house can bring some temporary energy for third house matters. It can be especially strong when it's transit Mars (amplifying mental energy and bringing more communications), transit Saturn (giving a negative outlook), transit Uranus (bringing brilliant insights and an unconventional approach to life), transit Pluto (makes you a more powerful communicator), or transit Chiron (focusing on healing wounds of expression or related to mental/verbal abuse/bullying).
Transit planets aspecting your natal 3rd house ruler can stimulate third house energy as well, and conjunctions, square, and oppositions by transit Saturn, Uranus, Pluto, or Chiron can be especially challenging and require a lot of focus on improving communication and expression. There's always a way out with the mind though, if you can get some control.
A Strong Third House in Astrology
Some may have a super strong natal third house. This can be the case for you if you have:
- a stellium (3+ planets) in the 3rd house
- your Sun, Moon, or Chiron in the 3rd house
- your North or South Node in your 3rd house
- your 1st house ruler in the 3rd house
- your 3rd house cusp or ruler anaretic (at 29 degrees)
- retrograde Mercury, Venus, or Mars in the 3rd house or ruling the 3rd house
When you have a strong 3rd house, communication is extra important for you, and you have to learn how to be a good communicator. This means learning how to express yourself in a way that is authentic for you and healthy, while also being a strong listener.
You likely have a very active mind, bursting with ideas and always coming up with new plans, and you can get wrapped up in them. You may struggle with taking action though, depending on the condition of the house and ruler.
You can be a great conversationalist, public speaker, and student, and this talent can be useful for you throughout your life, or become a part of what you do, if you hone it well.
