The second house in astrology is a solid, stable, grounded house. It comes after the action-packed first house, where we begin, so the second house is where we build on that and get ready for the changes in the third house. 2nd House Astrology & Your Natal Chart
Astrology charts have 12 houses, and each link to different parts of life. Your natal chart is a snapshot of the locations of the planets, other bodies, and houses in the Zodiac at the moment you're born and from the location you're born at. Each of your natal houses connects to different parts of your life and personality.
The 2nd house is ruled by Venus, sensual and pragmatic. The 2nd house gets Venus's earthy side. Since the 2nd house connects to Taurus, Ceres can also connect to the 2nd house (argued to be the real ruler of Taurus). Ceres is nurturing and resourceful. At-a-Glance 2nd House Keywords:
2nd House in Astrology: Resources and Money
The second house in astrology is best known as the house of money. The eighth house also connects with money, but the eighth house is other people's money (money you share or earn with others), whereas the second house is your own money.
The second house is your own resources, so this includes money but goes beyond that. It's your possessions, anything you own and is yours, so this can include material possessions and even things like property (though that is firstly governed by the fourth house). 2nd House in Astrology: Values
The second house is also widely known as the house of values. This means the values you have in life. Whether you abide by them or not is a whole other story (LOL! but the condition of your second house may show whether or not you do).
This ties the second house to the ninth house (which are your philosophical, political and religious beliefs) and the twelfth house (which are your spiritual beliefs). You can see how astrology splits these things up. 2nd House in Astrology: Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem
The second house connects to confidence and how you feel about yourself. The first house also connects to confidence, but it's more blustery than the second house. This is where your true levels of self-esteem lie.
What makes you feel confident and good about yourself, how you can improve your confidence and self-esteem, and what can make your confidence and self-esteem take a hit can all be in your second house. 2nd House in Astrology: Worth
This connects a little with the second house ruling your values and your self-esteem, so the second house also rules worth. This is self-worth as well as what you find worthy of your time, attention, money, and resources.
What you value is often tied to what you feel is worth your time, and your own self-esteem is often tied to your feelings of self-worth. This is found via your second house. 2nd House in Astrology: Stability and Security
The second house is a grounded house, and governs our stability and security. Along with the Moon, the second house shows what we need for stability and security, and what this can look like for us.
A challenging second house can show a life of ups and downs, lessons in going with the flow and embracing chaos; an easy second house can show an easy life (or at least easier, relatively speaking). 2nd House in Astrology: Physical and Sensual
The second house is a physical house. Remember it's ruled by Venus, a sensual planet connected to the physical world. The second house isn't a house of big thinking or feeling. It's instead a house of being connected to the physical body and physical world.
This means your senses are governed by the second house, and sensuality is here (not to be confused with sexuality, which is the eighth house; again, see how astrology splits them up). The physical world around us connects to the second house (along with the sixth house). 2nd House in Astrology: Abundant
The second house is where we find abundance (along with asteroid Abundantia and planet Jupiter). This ties into the second house connecting to the physical world and ruling our resources. Second house abundance can be with money (often if you have your natal Venus, Ceres, or Jupiter here), but it can also tie to other things depending on the sign the second house falls in, planets in the house, and what the second house ruler is up to.
Where Your Second House Energy is Found
For everyone, look to the Zodiac sign your second house falls in. The areas of life ruled by that sign are where you can focus on your resources, stability, and worth. Also look to the natural planetary ruler of your second house (the natural planetary ruler of the Zodiac sign your second house falls in) as this can also connect to the 2nd house energy.
If you have any natal planets in your second house, this can make the second house energy a lot stronger for you. That planet has a strong impact on your resources, what you value, your confidence, and your stability. Transit (moving) planets touring your second house can bring some temporary energy for second house matters. This often directly impacts your finances or resources in some way, and your attitude and approach to them, as well as to your confidence and values. Transit Pluto in the second house is the strongest and most notorious, as Pluto can strip your life down to the studs, removing anything false that has propped up your self-esteem or made you feel secure, and force you to start over. Transit planets aspecting your natal 2nd house ruler can stimulate second house energy as well, and conjunctions, squares, and oppositions by transit Saturn, Uranus, Pluto, or Chiron can be especially challenging and impact your confidence and resources. You have to work on having healthy security and self-esteem, and being smart with resources. A Strong Second House in Astrology
Some may have a super strong natal second house. This can be the case for you if you have:
- a stellium (3+ planets) in the 2nd house - your Sun, Moon, or Chiron in the 2nd house - your North or South Node in your 2nd house - your 1st house ruler in the 2nd house - your 2nd house cusp or ruler anaretic (at 29 degrees) - retrograde Mercury, Venus, or Mars in the 2nd house or ruling the 2nd house When you have a strong 2nd house, this can mean your resources and money are super important for you. You need to get money squared away and feel like you have enough resources to make you feel safe and secure. Without that, you can be on edge constantly, and can either be extra stubborn, refusing to budge out of fear, or extra wandering, lacking any certainty to stay put. Having solid self-confidence and bringing stability into your life is really important. It may be tempting to base these things off of something physical, but you likely need to learn how to feel good about yourself independent of anything physical. This creates sustainable security, and eventually sustainable abundance.
