The basics: A retrograde occurs when a planet appears to be moving backwards from our vantage point here on Earth. It isn't actually moving backwards, it just appears that way. Mercury turns retrograde most often because it's nearest to us, about 3-4 times per year, and lasts for several weeks. When a planet retrogrades, what that planet rules tends to be thrown off, along with what the sign it's retrograding in rules. Now we enter Venus madness! Are you excited? I’m not, because I’m a Libra, ruled by Venus, so this retrograde always throws me a little off. Fellow Libras as well as Taureans get that lovely, subtle feeling of things just being not quite right while Venus is retrograde. This Venus retrograde begins on July 25th at 5:29AM ET and ends on September 6th at 4:29AM ET, so mark your calendars. Venus rules love and money, and so our love for things, our desire gets a little wonky or disappears, and our money management in general is not so hot. We can indulge to the nth degree, and we’re considerably lazier in general. This retrograde actually begins in earth sign Virgo, 0 degrees of Virgo to be exact, the very first degree. Will Venus be like, do I wanna hit Virgo at all? Do I wanna hit them hard before I tackle Leo? Hmm . . . Virgo is the sign of work, routine, structure, the details, the little things. Work ethics go out the door, we don’t want to stick to a routine, we miss the details, and overlook the little things. But this doesn’t last long, because Venus retrogrades backward into fire sign Leo on July 31st at 11:27AM ET. Then the Leo fun begins. This can impact our love lives a lot more since Leo is the sign of dating and fun love. We can see a ton of people getting back together with old flames during this retrograde. Those of you in relationships should watch for taking advantage of your partner or vice versa, a lack of romance, and just not having the time or energy. Those of you single can lack the time or energy for dating at all, and get frustrated by the dating scene, saying screw it, I’m done, old maid bird lady, here I come. People can decide to break up, but it might not be permanent. Leo rules our hobbies and play time, so we can be extra grumpy when we don’t get our time to play, and no matter how much time we have, it just doesn’t seem to be enough. We go way too overboard with play. On the flipside, we can work so much that we have no time for play at all, and it makes us grouchy bears. Leo also rules children, so those of you with kids, prepare for them to be extra lazy, extra grumpy, wanting extra sweets. And they won’t try to charm you either, they’ll just take whatever they want and run, Patience is important, but also difficult with Venus retrograde. Because oh yeah, she rules patience too! Leo can be a selfish sign (sorry Leos), and with Venus retrograde, we can have a hard time caring as much for others anyway, so this combo can be the ultimate in selfishness. We have to force ourselves to remember that we’re not the king or queen of the Universe. Venus will make 4 major aspects during her retrograde. The first is a conjunction (in the same spot) to Jupiter on August 4th at 5:47PM ET, which amplifies the laziness and selfishness even more. Oh boy, will we be indulgent pigs. Venus will then square (hard aspect) Saturn the very next day, on August 5th at 11:08AM ET, and discipline? Self-control? Maturity? Responsibility? Those are foreign concepts. Venus will then trine (positive aspect) Uranus on August 19th at 12:44PM ET, and we may want to do things differently and go outside of our comfort zones, but do we have the actual drive to do so? Finally, Venus conjuncts Mars on September 1st at 1:04AM ET, and Venus + Mars usually = passion, but it might be a little wonky with Venus retrograde. We may have the drive but lack the appropriate outlet, or have the outlet but not the drive. Another note is that when Venus retrogrades into Leo on July 31st, we’ll also have a full moon that day in Leo’s opposing sign, air sign Aquarius. This full moon won’t be opposite Venus by degree (too far away), only by sign, but we can still feel the impact. A heaping dose of indulgence, coming right up! And this can also mark the end of some relationships as well, perhaps rather abruptly. The physical and mental have a hard time coming together. The turn retrograde begins at 0 degrees Virgo, so those of you Virgos born before August 25th may feel the turn retrograde most. The turn direct occurs at 14 degrees Leo, so those of you Leos born August 5th - 9th may feel the turn direct most. For the rest of you, check the house(s) Venus will be retrograding in of your own natal chart, and any aspects Venus will make during its retrograde to your natal planets, to fully understand how it will impact you personally. If you have Venus retrograde in your natal or progressed chart, you may not feel the worst of this. Those individuals generally don't experience the difficulties of the retrograde because it feels more natural to them. Of course, chances are everyone else around them doesn't have the same aspect, so they can still experience difficulties brought on by others.
