The Sun & Moon in Astrology

​The Sun and Moon are considered to be the two most important parts of your chart, along with your Ascendant. They are often referred to as the triad in astrology, and are the building blocks for who you are as a person. The Sun and Moon are also called the luminaries.

The Sun & Moon in Your Natal Chart

The Sun rules your inner self, the real you behind the facade (the Ascendant), while the Moon rules your emotions, how you react emotionally in situations and what you need to feel emotionally secure and safe. 

Study the positions of your Sun and Moon and the aspects they make to get a better understanding of what makes you tick. Look at the sign and house location for your natal Sun to see who your true self is, and look at the sign and house location for your natal Moon to see what you need for emotional security and how you emotionally react.

The most important aspect to consider is the aspect they make to one another. That alone can be the best indicator of how much you accept or are at war with yourself. 

You also want to look at the Sun-Moon midpoint, the exact middle of the two points, because that shows how your Sun and Moon best come together (and if you have your Sun and Moon making a difficult aspect to one another, the Sun-Moon midpoint can be beneficial to helping you manage it well).

The Sun-Moon midpoint can show how you balance the two bodies, and what makes you feel most whole, most complete, since it’s the merging of your ego and your heart.

The Sun & Moon in Prediction

In predictive astrology, the transit (moving) Sun shows where a light will be shown in your life with the house it's moving through and aspects it makes. Attention and focus will be paid to those areas. 

It takes about 1 month to go through each sign, 1 year for the entire Zodiac, and it doesn’t stray from where it is each year, so it’s around the same position for a date each year. It doesn’t retrograde (appear to move backward), and it’s a steady motion.

The transit Moon shows where your emotional focus will be, what will rile you up emotionally and how your emotional state will be. It’s the fastest planet and only spends 2-3 days in each sign, going through the entire Zodiac in under 1 month, so the emotional focus doesn’t last too long.

The Sun & Moon in General

The Sun rules Leo, a fire and fixed sign that rules love, creativity, fun, and romance. Leo is bold and brash, loves attention and praise, and is quite generous with its heart.

The Sun also rules the 5th house, which is the house of love. It shows who we love (and date and romance) as well as what we love (our hobbies). It’s a fun house that isn’t serious.

The Moon rules Cancer, a cardinal water sign, and this is the sign that rules emotions. Cancer is sensitive, in tune with feelings, and can take the lead with those it’s closest to. 

The Moon also rules the 4th house, which is the house of home and family. The 4th house can show your upbringing, what home and family mean to you, as well as what you hold at your core.
