A new year! The start of 2020 will bring with it the first eclipse for the year, a lunar eclipse in Cancer (and the first of 4 lunar eclipses for 2020, it's a big lunar eclipse year!), and a new moon in Aquarius. Go! What is a new moon?
A new moon occurs when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are in the exact same position in the Zodiac (called a conjunction). New moons are related to beginnings, have high energy, and are enthusiastic.
What is a lunar eclipse?
A lunar eclipse occurs with a full moon, which is when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are in the exact opposite positions in the Zodiac (called an opposition). It's an eclipse when it's within 18 1/2 degrees of the lunar nodes. Lunar eclipses are related to endings, culminations, and are emotional energy. Big developments and intense emotions can be prevalent with lunar eclipses.
Lunar Eclipse in Cancer: January 10th 2020 (2:21PM ET)
2020 is a big lunar eclipse year with 4 of them, and it starts right away with a lunar eclipse in water sign Cancer. This can bring out supreme emotional energy as Cancer is the sign of emotion, and lunar eclipse are highly emotional. Put them together, and feeling rule the day! This can help to drive us, and we can use our emotions to motivate us to take action. But it can also deter us, getting us off track if we're too upset and caught up in that. So we do have to get some control over it, which may not be easy.
Cancer rules the home and family, so we may finalize projects at home, finish plans for family events and gatherings, complete a move or real estate transaction, and can generally be more concerned with matters at home and with family. We may want to spend more time with the people we think of as family, and get more support from them emotionally. We all may be in need of some emotional support, and a strong support system can do a lot of good. Cancer is the very bottom of the chart, so we may be focused on something internally, at the core. We may want to strengthen the foundation of something that we feel is shaky, and shaky foundations can feel a lot stronger with this eclipse. Personally, you may feel this with the areas of life ruled by the house this eclipse occurs in, and the foundation requires your attention. In mundane astrology, Cancer rules not just our personal home but also our homeland, and we may focus on issues within our countries and societies. We have to work on being more objective though, as being subjective can cause problems. Look outside of yourself and see what else is going on in the world. For positive energy, the lunar eclipse is sextile (positive aspect, two signs away) transit Neptune in Pisces. This increases compassionate energy so we can be gentler with one another, and increases intuition and spiritual energy. This can help guide us through the emotional terrain. For hard energy, this eclipse is opposite transit Mercury, Saturn, and Pluto in Capricorn. We've got that big Capricorn energy as the new year starts, and this eclipse is at odds with it. We may be sparring over ideas and plans, over responsibilities and duties, over power and control. We have to control our mental energy, exercise discipline, and work on positive transformations. This isn't an easy eclipse! And we're likely going to need a to find some space, some room to breathe, otherwise we may feel the emotional weight of it all. The lunar eclipse occurs at 20 degrees 0 minutes Cancer. The aspects this lunar eclipse makes are: Conjunction: 15 degrees 0 minutes - 25 degrees 0 minutes Cancer Semisextile: 18 degrees 0 minutes - 22 degrees 0 minutes Gemini or Leo Sextile: 15 degrees 0 minutes - 25 degrees 0 minutes Taurus or Virgo Square: 15 degrees 0 minutes - 25 degrees 0 minutes Aries or Libra Trine: 15 degrees 0 minutes - 25 degrees 0 minutes Scorpio or Pisces Quincunx: 18 degrees 0 minutes - 22 degrees 0 minutes Sagittarius or Aquarius Opposition: 15 degrees 0 minutes - 25 degrees 0 minutes Capricorn New Moon in Aquarius: January 24th 2020 (4:42PM ET)
With the new moon in Aquarius, this is an excellent time to focus on the future, something Aquarius rules. We're at the start of a new year, so we can think about where we're going, what we want to be doing, and what we hope for. We can feel more hopeful in general, and seize opportunities to pursue dreams.
We can feel independent and willing to do things in new, different ways. Aquarius is the unconventional sign, after all! So we may break from tradition and feel like trying out something we never have before. It may be totally weird, but that's alright with Aquarius! We want to embrace what's different, and our own individuality. We can encourage everyone to be true to themselves, to be authentically unique, and feel comfortable with the quirks and eccentricities we all have. Aquarius governs change, so we may want to make new changes, and can feel more willing to change the status quo. This can be a great time to start focusing on change that can lead to more opportunities for the future down the road, and we can feel more comfortable with the changes we pursue. You might make changes yourself in the areas of life ruled by the house this new moon occurs in your natal chart, and you can work more independently and unconventionally. This new moon is square (hard aspect, three signs away) transit Uranus in earth sign Taurus. Uranus is the natural ruler of Aquarius, so we may have to be more mindful of the changes that we're working on, of the ways we're being independent, and of the dreams we want to pursue. We need to think things through, and make sure we've done our homework and aren't acting impulsively. We need to consider others, and not just go it alone. We're all in this together! The new moon occurs at 4 degrees 21 minutes Aquarius. The major aspects this new moon makes are Conjunction: 2 degrees 21 minutes - 6 degrees 21 minutes Aquarius Sextile: 2 degrees 21 minutes - 6 degrees 21 minutes Aries or Sagittarius Square: 2 degrees 21 minutes - 6 degrees 21 minutes Taurus or Scorpio Trine: 2 degrees 21 minutes - 6 degrees 21 minutes Gemini or Libra Opposition: 2 degrees 21 minutes - 6 degrees 21 minutes Leo Suggested Reading: New & Full Moons page for general interpretations Comments are closed.
