Another character analysis! This time I'll dive into Mr. Ichabod Crane, the hapless bloke from The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. I always loved this story, and the show Sleepy Hollow debuts its second season tonight (*heart*), so I thought this would make a good post. This story was written by Washington Irving, and published back in 1820. Still popular after almost 200 years - not too shabby! I'm basing this analysis on the book version of Ichabod, not the TV one.
Wanna read it for yourself? http://www.gradesaver.com/the-legend-of-sleepy-hollow/e-text/section1/
SUN & MERCURY
Ichabod Crane comes to Sleepy Hollow to teach, and teachers fall under the signs of Taurus, Gemini, and Sagittarius. Given the descriptions of Ichabod, how he's quite sociable (though I always pictured him as a popular nerd), gets along very well with the kids, loves stories and interested in the supernatural, I gravitate toward Gemini. Gemini rules lower education of the younger children (instead of higher education with Sagittarius), and loves stories too. He seems to get along with everyone, which is very air sign, and has an active mind, so I put his Sun and Mercury conjunct in Gemini. He's also described as "carrying the whole budget of local gossip from house to house, so that his appearance was always greeted with satisfaction." Very Gemini! Plus, he has this child-like curiosity about the world, as Gemini does. Also, his physical description of being kind of lanky would go more toward Gemini than the other two signs.
Saturn - When Saturn is linked with Mercury (often in harsh aspect, oddly), that usually shows someone who loves reading and books, which Ichabod does, so perhaps his Saturn is conjunct, semisquare, square, sesquiquadrate, or opposite his Mercury. He's also a disciplinarian, but careful in how he carries it out, which speaks to Saturn.
MOON & VENUS
Ichabod has a crazy appetite, adoring food, and has a desire for luxury, which seems to be the driving force behind his going after Katrina (who doesn't want to marry rich? lol). This brings me to Taurus, which loves luxury, material things, and hello, who loves food more than Taurus? No one. I like his Moon and Venus conjunct in Taurus because it amplifies his appetite for food and wealth, and it also keeps him in a pretty agreeable mood. He doesn't seem to get all that high or low, is pleasant company, and is charming in his own way. Taurus would give him that stick-to-it-iveness that he shows when he's pursuing Katrina, and how he's not deterred by his rival Brom Bones (even though he should've been). Plus, the combo of Taurus and Gemini for his personal planets shows someone who always has to fill the air with words. Oh, and Taurus rules singing, which Ichabod is known for.
Ichabod, as much as I love him, does not come across as much of a manly man, so I'm staying away from any of those kinds of Mars positions (Aries, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn). Pisces would make a lot of sense because of his active imagination - when he's out at night in Sleepy Hollow, he swears he sees all sorts of crazy things. Delusions, illusions, so Pisces. Ichabod is also said to believe in the supernatural, which is governed by Pisces. This would give him lots of mutable energy (Gemini and Pisces are mutable signs), and keeps him from being in-your-face (cardinal signs) or practical (fixed signs).
Ichabod is said to be tall and lanky, and I thought of the lunar nodes with this. The closer your north node is to the Ascendent (1st house cusp), the taller you are (or appear to be). I'd put his north node in the 1st house near his Ascendent. I haven't chosen a rising sign for him though, but I'd guess an air sign, Virgo, or Pisces.
ASTEROIDS: HERMES & THE MUSES
I feel like these asteroids would be prominent for Ichabod. Throughout the story, it's mentioned many times how much Ichabod sings. Hermes is an asteroid ruling music, and the asteroid Muses could show a lot of different things with him: Calliope, the muse of epic poetry and Erato, the muse of love poetry and mimicry, because in his belongings they find poetry he's tried to write for Katrina; Terpsichore, the muse of dancing, and he likes to dance; Euterpe, the muse of music; and Melpomene, the muse of tragic storytelling.
In the end, no one knows what happened to Ichabod, though some say he lived on and did other things, and that Brom Bones had something to do with scaring him away. As for the Headless Horseman, he was said to be a fighter who lost his head in the war, and sticks around to find his head. I'd guess a combo of Aries (rules the head and war), Scorpio (the other sign that rules war but is more ruthless), and Cancer (rules the home, and clinginess), and probably a harsh Sun/Mars/Saturn/Uranus combo (losing his head!).
The basics: A retrograde occurs when a planet appears to be moving backwards from our vantage point here on Earth. It isn't actually moving backwards, it just appears that way. Mercury turns retrograde most often because it's nearest to us, about 3-4 times per year, and lasts for several weeks. When a planet retrogrades, what that planet rules tends to be thrown off, along with what the sign it's retrograding in rules.
With Mercury retrograde, we experience a shadow and a storm. The shadow period starts when Mercury first hits the point in the zodiac it will turn direct at, and ends when it last hits the point in the zodiac it will turn retrograde at. Most people don't feel the effects of Mercury retrograde until it enters the storm period though. The storm period of Mercury retrograde is when Mercury is moving at its slowest, less than 40 minutes per day. Mercury is a fast-moving planet and hates it when he's moving slowly. There's usually two storm periods, one around the time Mercury turns retrograde, and one around when it turns direct.
The shadow of this Mercury retrograde begins September 14th and ends November 10th. The exact retrograde begins October 4th at 1:02PM ET and ends October 25th at 3:17PM ET. The first storm period is September 28th - October 10th, and the second storm period is October 22nd - 30th.
This retrograde begins in water sign Scorpio. This will be the last retrograde in a water sign for a few years, so cheer up water signs! In Scorpio, we can see problems with transformations and other people’s money. Transformations can mean things like sex or death, so these things could have a problem at the start of this retrograde. We can see the return of former lovers, seem morbid or focused on the dark side of life, and either have a hard time being serious, or are way too serious and need to get bopped upside the head. We’re overly emotional (since water signs rule our emotions), and we’re moody to the extreme, going from one extreme emotion to the next like it’s nothing and normal. Not nothing, not normal!
Mercury will retrograde backward into air sign Libra on October 10th at 1:26PM ET, so he won’t be retrograde in Scorpio for very long. The time around the 10th is the most important since Mercury will be at the beginning of one sign and the end of another, so the energy is amplified, and we can really see people fighting (or even war kind of fighting) around this time.
Libra rules committed relationships, so we can simultaneously see relationships falling apart like that (*snap of the fingers*), and people reunite that we didn’t think would (or should). For those who break up, communication is likely the culprit, and since it’s during a retrograde, the break up may not be permanent, so don’t do anything drastic (like drive their car off a cliff). For those who get back together, you remember all of the things you loved about each other, but since it’s during a retrograde, the reunion may not be permanent, so don’t do anything drastic (like buy a wedding dress).
Libra also rules fairness, equality, justice, compromise, diplomacy - all of that goes out the window. We’re fighting like cats and dogs, and don’t want to give an inch, let alone a mile. We can say the wrong things at the wrong times to the wrong people, and are less than tactful. This could especially be the case when Mercury conjuncts (is in the same spot as) transit (moving) Venus on October 17th, and we can stick out foots in our mouths like crazy, or try to kiss and make up, even just temporarily.
The one good thing about this retrograde is Mercury doesn’t make any difficult aspects during its course, so phew for that - but not so fast. The end of this retrograde will be opposite the lunar eclipse occurring October 8th in Aries, so we could see some wackiness from that toward the end of the retrograde. And the start of this retrograde will be conjunct the solar eclipse occurring October 23rd, but that could make things a little easier at the start. Getting out guards down so it can rip our hearts out!
The turn retrograde begins at 2 degrees Scorpio, so those of you Scorpions born October 27th and earlier may feel the turn retrograde most. The turn direct occurs at 16 degrees Libra, so those of you Librans born October 8th - 11th may feel the turn direct most.
For the rest of you, check the house(s) Mercury will be retrograding in of your own natal chart, and any aspects Mercury will make during its retrograde to your natal planets, to fully understand how it will impact you personally.
If you have Mercury retrograde in your natal or progressed chart, you may not feel the worst of this. Those individuals generally don't experience the difficulties of the retrograde because it feels more natural to them. Of course, chances are everyone else around them doesn't have the same aspect, so they can still experience difficulties brought on by others.
October 2014 Full & New Moons: Lunar Eclipse in Aries & Solar Eclipse on Scorpio
A full moon occurs when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are exactly opposing one another in the zodiac. It tends to signal a time of endings, culminations, and things coming to fruition. A new moon occurs when the transit Sun and Moon are in the exact same spot in the zodiac. It tends to signal a time of new opportunities, growth, and optimism. A lunar eclipse is like a full moon, and a solar eclipse is like a new moon.
For information on how the new/full moons may impact your sign, read the monthly horoscope.
October 8th 2014 Lunar Eclipse in Aries
A lunar eclipse occurs at 6:51AM ET at 15 degrees 6 minutes of Aries. In Aries, we have independent minds and strong wills. We defend ourselves a little too quickly, act in haste, can be impatient when we’re emotional. If we rein in our emotions, we can get control over situations, and bring closure to important things. We express how we feel when we feel it, and don’t hold anything in and hold any grudges. This eclipse is conjunct (in the same spot as) transit (moving) Uranus, adding to our impulsive behavior and need for independence. It’s also trine (positive aspect) transit Jupiter in Leo and transit Mars in Sagittarius, so it’s part of a grand trine, where three planets are around the same degree in the signs of the same element. This is usually harmonious, and with the fire signs, we’re creative and need to express ourselves, daring and confident, but we can waste the good energy if we don’t take action or are too full of ourselves. Remember that the impact of eclipses can last up to six months. If you're an Aries Sun, Moon, or mid-Aries rising, you may feel the effects of this moon most.
October 23rd 2014 Solar Eclipse in Scorpio
A solar eclipse occurs at 5:57PM ET at 0 degrees 25 minutes of Scorpio. In Scorpio, we have an easier time facing the more serious aspects of life and the world. We don’t view it so pessimistically, and try to be constructive. We can deal with the dark side, the things we hide from everyone, and can come to terms with some secrets and skeletons. It’s of our own choosing, and we try to be positive. WE can begin to transform ourselves, our lives, and the world for the better, emerging from the ashes after what’s seemed like several forevers. This eclipse is conjunct transit Venus in Scorpio, which softens harsh Scorpio. We can connect better with one another, compromise and talk of peace, and work together over common bonds and interests. We could see quite a few people enter into important relationships since Venus rules love and Scorpio rules intimacy. This could be personally, or even with countries. Venus also rules your income and Scorpio rules other people’s money, so this is an excellent eclipses for individuals and countries to deal with financial matters. Remember that the impact of eclipses can last up to six months. If you're a Scorpio Sun, Moon, or rising, you may feels the effects of this moon most.

Venus is in your sign for most of the month, so you’re the love goddess for September. You seem more attractive and charming, and have less of a problem attracting people to you. Even when you don’t really change anything, you just come across a little differently. The full moon on the 8th occurs in your relationships sector, so if attached, you can become closer or choose to break things off. If single, you can meet someone new who you feel a karmic link to, and it’s intense and emotional right from the beginning.
You want to keep things quiet in your love life this month. If in a relationship, you don’t want anyone to see you being affectionate, and only do it behind closed doors. You might even keep your relationship a secret from some people. If single, you can meet someone who interests you, but you don’t want to say anything to anyone just yet, or you start seeing someone secretly. You can be a little unrealistic on the 10th, so don’t make big decisions. Passion runs higher on the 14th, and you can be more intimate.
The full moon on the 8th occurs in your love sector, and you can become closer to someone you’ve been dating, or feel that it’s not going quite right and call things off. If in a relationship, you’re more emotional with your partner. If single, you can meet someone you have a spiritual and emotional connection with. On the 14th, your ruler, Pluto positively hits Venus, the planet of love, so this can be the best day of the month for love and romance in your life. Plan a date and bring out your romantic side.
You’re practical in love this month, not overly affectionate or loving, and preferring to see if those in your life actually deserve your love. If in a relationship, you’re distant and a little cold, and need to make time for your partner. If single, you want potential suitors to pass a test and show they’re worthy of you, otherwise you won’t waste any time on them. This isn’t the best month for love really, as you’re more focused on other things in life, and feel that love is a bit frivolous and silly at this juncture.
You’re willing to be more daring and adventurous with love in September, and want to have some fun with it. You usually take it pretty seriously, but sometimes, you need to just enjoy it for what it is. If in a relationship, you can have an adventure with your partner, do some traveling, or be more daring in the bedroom. If single, you can meet someone new through your travels, hanging out at the bookstore, or who starts a passionate debate with you at a party, eliciting some serious sparks, especially on the 21st.
Venus is in your intimacy sector for most of September, so you’re not up for anything playful or silly. You want a real, deep connection with someone, something profound and gets to your core. If in a relationship, you work harder to strengthen the bonds you have with your partner, and can be more passionate physically. If single, you’re drawn to people who seem intense and deep, and who exude power and authority. Just make sure you don’t give in to too much dominance, by yourself or your partner.
Venus is in your relationships sector for most of the month, and you enjoy spending time with your loved ones, especially one-on-one where you feel you’re getting their undivided attention. If in a relationship, you can be more affectionate and supportive. If single, you want to be in a relationship with someone who’s an equal to you and will treat you with respect. As the month goes on, you become more passionate and intense in love, wanting strong bonds and a level of closeness that might be too much to ask for.

Venus is in your work sector for most of the month, and this helps you get more work done when you put your mind to it and focus on working. The problem is, it makes you so lazy that you don’t even get started with work, so you might be even less productive if you don’t force yourself to move. The Sun is in this sector until the 22nd, so you can shine and be recognized for your work if you focus. The 21st might not be a good day for work though, with your ruler harshly hitting Neptune and zapping your concentration.
Your focus shifts more and more toward your work life as this month goes on. You can come up with work ideas and focus on the small tasks and projects to start the month, and by the end of the month, you shine with your work and make good impressions on the right people. A new moon in your work sector on the 24th could bring a great new work opportunity for you. Your ruler, Venus, positively hits Saturn on the 21st, and this could be your most productive day of the month, and you have great focus and discipline.
You’re more productive during the first half of the month, and you want to get done as much as you can before you get to the second half of the month and your focus shifts away from work. The full moon on the 8th could give you a clue of which direction you should go in next, and let you know if you should continue as you have been or go down a new path for your life. You’re not comfortable doing anything out of the ordinary on the 13th, and should try to stick to conventional methods to solve any major problems.
During the second half of the month, Mars is in your work sector, so your productivity skyrockets. You want to work hard, can focus on what you need to focus on, and will get through any and all of your tasks and chores. You don’t even mind having to do the things no one else wants to do. If it’ll get things done faster and you can do it better than anyone else, you’ll do it happily. You have to watch for being too much of a perfectionist, and demanding far too much of yourself. Cut yourself some slack, humanoid.
Venus is in your money sector for most of the month, and you can spend money as fast as you can make it, so you need to rein yourself in a little if you don’t want to go broke. You can get as much money as you need so you don’t have to worry about not having enough, but you should make the most of this by putting in some extra effort and being smarter with your finances. If you do, you can be rewarded. The 11th is your most productive day, and you can put in extra work, make good decisions, and play responsibly.
Your finances become more important to you as the month of September goes on, and you can come up with financial plans and budgets to start the month. You get advice from people about how to handle your finances, and figure out what you want to do. By the end of the month, you feel good about where you are, can reap rewards, and create opportunities. The 10th might turn out to be your best day, and you can turn your luck around. The 13th could be a difficult day, and you avoid doing anything too risky.
With the planets gearing up to be in your sign, this can be a great time for you to get a new project or plan started that you’ll work on over the next year. You come up with ideas and plans to start the month, get advice and gather data that you need. You can take a chance and get started with the Sun entering your sign on the 22nd, and kick it all off with the new moon in your sign on the 24th. Financial rewards could be in play with Mars in your money sector during the first half of the month. It’s your time, Libra!
Mars is in your sign to begin September, giving you an edge with energy and making you willing to take chances on yourself. You’re driven, passionate, enthusiastic. Mars enters your money sector during the second half of the month, and you can focus on opportunities that will reward you financially. Pluto, your ruler, ends his retrograde (appearing to move backward) on the 22nd, and this helps flip the switch for you. It’s been stuck in the off position, and suddenly the light comes on and somebody is home.
Venus is in your career and life path sector for most of the month, making it easier for you to charm the right people, make good first impressions, and talk your boss into getting your way. It also means you’re lazier with your career though, and need to force yourself to put in the hours, otherwise your work languishes and you get nowhere fast. Venus will help you if you put in the work, so put in a little effort, and see how you can get much further with less work than usual, and use that as motivation to work more.
You focus more on your career, goals, and life path as the month of September goes on, and you can make plans that need to be made and have a practical attitude about it. By the end of the month, you’re being recognized for what you’ve done, thrust into the spotlight, and new opportunities are thrown your way. The 11th could be the first bit of recognition and praise you receive. Pluto has been retrograde (appearing to move backward) in your sign, and ends on the 22nd, and you feel like you’re getting your power back.
Mars is in your career sector until the 13th, and you’re driven and ambitious for the first half of the month. The full moon on the 8th is in your money sector, and you can be rewarded for financial decisions, or punished for financial mismanagement. On the 13th, your ruler, Uranus, opposes Mercury, and this isn’t the best day for sharing ideas, getting advice, giving news, reviewing documents, or going over the details, and could be fraught with misunderstandings and miscommunications, so keep your mouth shut.
Mars is in your career sector during the second half of September, and you can focus more on your goals and be more ambitious. You want to achieve, succeed, and failure is not an option, so you’re too hard on yourself when failure does occur. You can’t succeed at absolutely everything. The 21st could be particularly trying with your ruler, Neptune, harshly hitting Mars, and you lack energy or have too much of it, get roped into fights you shouldn’t be in, or lack any drive at all for the things you need to work on.
There are tons of asteroids out there that are just people's names. Go through the list of asteroids on astro.com, and see if any of them are of your name. It can be your first, middle, or last name, a nickname, or something close to your name. Then see what the asteroid is doing in your own chart.
My name is Nicole, which is asteroid 1343. In my natal chart, asteroid Nicole is at 29 degrees Sagittarius and my 2nd house. Interesting because 29 degrees is the anaretic degree! I don't have anything at the anaretic degree with my natal planets and houses, yet I always felt that energy somehow. Guess I was subconsciously feeling my asteroid at the anaretic degree. With my asteroid at the anaertic degree, I'd guess that it hinders me from being able to be who I really am. I second-guess myself too much and try to be what other people want me to be. That was sooo the case in my younger years, and I ended up going through this major crisis where I had no clue who I was, and basically had to start over from scratch with my personality. Oddly, my progressed Moon was opposite my asteroid Nicole at the time. If I can work with the anaretic energy, I can be a powerful personality. I just have to let me be me.
I like to think that the sign of your asteroid is like an alternate Sun sign for you, and Sagittarius is especially important for me since my Sun/Moon midpoint is in Sagittarius - in fact, my asteroid falls on my Sun-Moon midpoint! No wonder I've always thought I should strive to manifest my Sun-Moon midpoint more. This area is complicated though - conjunct asteroids Bacchus, Icarus, and Atropos, all falling on the Galactic Center - joy! (sarcasm) The Galactic Center makes you ahead of your time, and that's certainly been the case for me. I'm so ahead of my time, I'm sure I won't be appreciated for several lifetimes. LOL Actually, I was always a trendsetter growing up, I'd do my hair a certain way or wear some kind of clothing, and people would think it was so weird, but then it'd be all the rave in 6-12 months (how GC!). I do have to watch for overindulging, though I can also have great artistic ability (Bacchus), and not fly too high (Icarus). I end things pretty quickly and finally (Atropos).
Asteroid Nicole is also conjunct my Neptune, but it's an out-of-sign conjunction, with Nicole at 29 degrees Sagittarius, and Neptune at 0 degrees Capricorn. I still feel the importance of my Neptune though, and I can be a daydreamer, a little unrealistic at times (though that gets clamped down with Saturn in my 1st house), and drawn to mysticism, water, and the arts.
You can look to see if your asteroid is prominent in the charts of those you're close to. For example, in my brother's chart, his asteroid Nicole is conjunct his Moon - I always was a bit of a mother to him!
In transit, where your asteroid is located and the aspects it makes can show events in your life and where your focus is. I actually track the aspects my asteroid makes to my natal planets, houses, and the transit planets just like I track the rest of the transit planets aspecting my chart. I've said before that on the day that I first got obsessed with asteroids, asteroid Nicole was sitting on my 3rd house cusp, the house of learning. How astrological! To find where your asteroid is currently located you can use astro.com (go to extended chart selection, then click on ephemeris, and type the number for your asteroid in the additional asteroids and other objects section). So what is your asteroid up to?
With everything going on in the NFL right now, I've been commenting on the astrology of various charts involved for Roger Goodell, Ray Rice, Steve Bisciotti, Adrian Peterson (you can read the blog post HERE). The astrology of it all has piqued my interest (it's actually odd I haven't done this before given how much I love sports and astrology!), so I decided to go further and see if there is a "natal" chart for the NFL. Since the problems are plaguing the entire league, with players from various teams in trouble, this seems to be more than just a few guys with bad aspects. It feels like a total league thing. So I wanted to see about constructing an NFL natal chart.
Figuring out the data to use for the birth of the NFL was a little tricky. The NFL was originally created in 1920, and there was apparently a meeting for a meeting, with the group originally coming together August 20th to put something together, but things officially coming together on September 17th. The NFL holds September 17th as it's official birth date. I did think about instead using the first game played that counted in the standings (September 26th), but there's no time for when that game began. I also considered using the date for the first ever professional football game played (November 12th 1892), but that wasn't a direct descendant of the NFL, which was the American Professional Football Association, and that was officially created September 17th 1920. The time for that meeting, according to the Minutes of Meeting papers, was 8:15PM. This is the only date that has a time. The chart is below:
Once I evaluated this chart and started looking at aspects, returns, progressions, it became clear that this is the natal chart for the NFL. It shows so much of what's going on right now, it's scary!
First, looking at the aspects occurring to this chart right now, I immediately realized that transit Pluto is quincunx Neptune, which rules the 12th house in the chart. The 12th house rules hidden things, and is the house of self undoing. Quincunxes are erratic energy. This problem that the NFL has tried to hide is coming out erratically, and causing it's unraveling. With Neptune involved, it's having a hard time grasping things. Transit Pluto is also in the 9th house - legal problems!
Transit Neptune, which has been causing problems in Goodell's chart, is opposite Jupiter, which rules the 8th house in the chart and is in the 5th house. I think the term "violent love" with this coupling. The 5th house is the house of love, and the 8th house rules violence.
Transit Uranus is opposite Venus, which is a planet that comes up big right now. Venus is important in this chart because Taurus is on the 1st house, so Venus rules the 1st house of the self. Venus is also co-ruler of the 6th house of work. So this came out suddenly, unexpectedly, rocking their world. Transit Uranus is in the 12th house, suddenly taking those skeletons out of the closet.
The upcoming Mercury retrograde will occur entirely in the 6th house of the chart, signaling a big change of what they're thinking now. The beginning of the retrograde (October 4th) makes easy aspects, semisextile the Moon and Mercury, but the end of the retrograde (October 25th) is conjunct Venus. So perhaps they think things will be okay at the beginning of the month, but it gets crazy by the end.
The lunar eclipse is also important here. I've talked about the tie with this eclipse, Uranus being conjunct now stimulating it, and the end of the Mercury retrograde next month being opposite it adding in some wackiness, and that if you have anything between 13-17 degrees of Aries, Cancer, Libra, or Capricorn, it's getting hit by all this action. Well, Venus in this chart is at that crisis point, sitting at 15 degrees Libra. It's being opposed by Uranus now, will be conjunct the end of the Mercury retrograde next month, and is opposed by the lunar eclipse next month. With Venus ruling the 1st house of the self, that's why it's rocking the NFL so hard. And the lunar eclipse will occur where? The 12th house. They can't hide this.
And the full moon on September 8th in Pisces - it helped stimulate Ray Rice reaping what he sowed, but it also hit the NFL natal chart by squaring Saturn. Saturn rules the 10th house in the chart, which rules public image. So of course that's taken a hit.
The NFL chart has a mutable t-square in it, with Jupiter in Virgo opposite Uranus in Pisces square Moon in Sagittarius. This is interesting because Roger Goodell has a mutable grand square falling right on it, with Pluto in Virgo opposite Mercury (and potentially Sun) in Pisces square Jupiter in Sagittarius opposite Mars in Gemini. His Mars in Gemini falls on the empty leg of the NFL chart. Transit Neptune is currently activating the NFL t-square and Goodell's grand square, opposite the NFL's Jupiter, conjunct Goodell's Mercury, and square his important Mars.
One of the first reasons why I thought this date made sense was because that would mean a solar return would be coming in a few days, and all of this action right now feels like something around a return to me. Here is the solar return chart:
Immediately, you can see that the AC/DC axis for this return is at 0 degrees Capricorn/Cancer, which is a critical degree - crisis energy! And with Capricorn on the 1st house of the self, concern about public image; with Cancer on the 7th house of relationships, regarding people's family relationships. That's even more focused with the Moon in Cancer in the 7th house, and the location of the Moon can show the emotional focus of the return. I also think the Moon in this chart is conjunct Goodell's natal Moon (depends on his time of birth).
The Sun is conjunct the 9th house cusp, and the AC is conjunct the natal 9th house cusp, showing legal problems. The ruler of the chart, Saturn, is conjunct the 11th house cusp, which could be showing the public backlash. It could indicate that they have a smaller audience over the next year (though that seems doubtful). Jupiter is on the 8th house cusp, which can show they still make money through it all. It can also show that the violence (8th house) is far from being an isolated incident, with Jupiter being the planet of expansion (the league-wide problem). With Vertex, a point of destiny, also on the 8th house cusp, this has a fated quality to it.
Mercury is on the MC, so messaging is important. Part of Fortune is conjunct both, which is good for success and image, so they can come back from this. Mercury in the natal chart is square the solar return AC/DC though, which is contributing to the messaging problem.
There's also a grand square in the solar return chart, with Mercury in Libra opposite Uranus in Aries square Moon in Cancer opposite Pluto in Capricorn. In cardinal signs, there's a lot of energy, but it's hard to actually do anything with it because you want to do too much. This could show that the league ends up throwing everything but the kitchen sink at the problem over the next year to try and make things right, but nothing really sticks.
I also wanted to pull up the latest lunar return chart. Lunar returns occur every month, and can be instigators. The latest lunar return was September 1st. Chart below:
The Sun in the lunar return chart falls on the 9th house cusp, just like the Sun in the solar return chart does. The Moon is conjunct the 12th house cusp of hidden things, endings, self undoing. Mercury is at the anaretic degree, 29 degrees, in Virgo and the 9th house. The anaretic degree is a crisis point, and with Mercury, it explains the bad communications (with Virgo, missing the details too).
The AC in the lunar return chart is conjunct Ray Rice's Saturn, the planet of restrictions and limitations and paying for irresponsibility. Both the AC in the lunar return chart and Rice's Saturn were squared by the full moon on September 8th in Pisces. So it makes sense that this return coupled with the full moon brought the focus to him, and he got his career taken away from him (at least for now).
And this chart has another thing we've discussed - a mutable t-square! Sun and Venus in Virgo opposite Neptune in Pisces square Moon in Sagittarius, so just like the NFL natal chart, the empty leg is Gemini, which Goodell's mutable grand square fills with his Mars, getting hit by Neptune. Boom goes the dynamite?
A look at the progressed chart for the NFL also has some telling features. The chart below:
Quite a bit jumped out here! The first thing I noted was that the progressed Moon is currently conjunct the progressed Midheaven. Talk about complete focus on public image! They're all anyone can talk about, thank you progressed Moon on the MC (and in Aries, that's one of the signs ruling violence). That'll continue to be the case through October. The progressed Moon is at 28 degrees right now, and will be at 29 degrees for the month of October. When a progressed planet is at 29 degrees, the anaretic degree, it's big energy, change. I gotta say, I'll be surprised if Goodell keeps his job with everything I'm seeing. Big change coming for the NFL with this, the eclipse, the retrograde.
Add to that the Sun, which is also currently at 28 degrees. It goes to 29 degrees October 26th (will that be around when Goodell loses his job?), and will stay there for one year. This would show the NFL totally revamping itself over the next year. When your progressed Sun is at 29 degrees, you have to look at yourself, assess what you want to change, and start finishing one chapter and starting another. Add to that the Midheaven, which is also at 28 degrees, and will be at 29 degrees all of 2015. The MC rules your public image, which again goes to the NFL changing itself.
And the progressed Venus is currently right on the DC! Venus in the natal NFL chart is the one being hit like crazy now. With progressed Venus on the DC, the NFL has to work on improving its relationship with others - this can be through trying to work on helping players behave better (couple's counseling, anger management, or whatever they come up with), or through trying to improve their relationship with the public, especially women with Venus involved. How fitting?
Taking a quick look at upcoming lunar returns, another occurs September 28th with Saturn on the DC, showing more problems with the public, and more squeezing on the commissioner. Another occurs October 26th, right around the time things seem to be looking to burst, and in that chart, Neptune is on the DC - dissolving the relationship with the commissioner? Another option - Ray Rice's suspension is overturned, and it doesn't go over well with the league looking out of touch with reality.
