In astrology, there is something called elements used as a way to categorize the Zodiac signs. Each Zodiac sign is assigned to one of the 4 elements in astrology, and each element has 3 Zodiac signs. They are: Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces Astrology also has 10 planets, including the Sun and Moon and excluding the Earth. How we express our emotions, and what we need for emotional stability and security is shown via our natal Moon sign, which is the Zodiac sign the Moon was in at the moment we were born. The earth sign Moons - Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn Moons - are the Moon signs that are practical. Earth is the fixed element, rooted in the Earth, and this grounds their signs. Taurus Moons take things slow and steady; Virgo Moons create detailed plans; and Capricorn Moon are disciplined. But what does it mean when someone is an earth sign Moon, but they're not practical? They don't seem to be very grounded, or realistic, or focused. They may be fiery, emotional, or aloof. What astrology shows a person with an earth sign Moon doesn't act like an earth sign Moon? The 12th House of the Hidden
There are 12 houses in astrology, and each has different energy. The twelfth house is the house of the hidden, and it hides the energy of any planet or body that resides there. With the Moon, this means it hides the energy of the Moon sign, so if an earth sign Moon has their Moon in the 12th house, they may have difficulty expressing themselves emotionally.
An earth sign Moon in the12th house does have a lot of practical energy, however this only seems to come out when they're on their own and not bothered by anyone, or they're with someone but it's someone they know very well and trust, or when they're not operating from the conscious mind and instead are going based on subconscious instinct. An earth sign Moon in this house is usually an air sign Rising, so they may seem more intellectually-oriented. But they actually have great power in the physical world, and can create more than their lofty words might make it seem. They're not all talk, and want to make something tangible. Moon Conjunctions
If the person's earth sign Moon is conjunct, or aligned with, another planet, they may predominantly express their emotional Moon via that planet instead of the sign their Moon is in. The natural rulers of the earth signs are Venus (Taurus), Mercury (Virgo), and Saturn (Capricorn), so conjunct any of these three amplifies the earth sign Moon. But if it's another planet, it may tamp it down significantly.
This is especially true when the natal earth sign Moon is conjunct Mars, Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, or Chiron. Mars is the planet of energy and drive, so a conjunction to Mars ramps up the energy of the native and adds more impulsive, excitable energy to them. Uranus can make it more unpredictable, more unconventional, and that can really seem different from the sign. Neptune can dissolve some of the earthy energy, and make it more flowing. Pluto can bring out passionate intensity, and Chiron can add extra sensitivity. Ceres is argued to be the natural ruler of Taurus instead of Venus, so Ceres conjunct an earth sign Moon can increase the earthy energy. The Sun conjunction the earth sign Moon can make it a bit more active and fiery. Mercury is neutral energy, and the practical nature of the earth sign Moon might come out more in communication. Abundance of Other Elements
If someone with an earth sign Moon has an abundance of another element in their planets, so say 5 planets in one of the other elements, that element can be more dominant in their personality, and this can tamp down their earth sign Moon.
An abundance of fire planets brings more enthusiasm and activity to the practical energy and make them seem more energetic; an abundance of air sign planets makes them more intellectual, social, and engaging, and more open to activity; and an abundance of water planets amplifies emotions and creativity, and makes them more spiritual and empathetic.
