2025 is going to come to a close with Mars retrograde in Leo, and soon moves into Cancer in the new year. Joy! What can we expect from this retrograde?
The basics - what is Mars retrograde?
A planet is called retrograde when it appears to be moving backward from our view here on Earth. It's not actually moving backward, and only looks that way. Mars retrogrades roughly every 2 - 2 1/2 years for about 2 - 2 1/2 months. Mercury retrogrades most often (3-4 times each year for about 3 weeks at a time) while Neptune and Pluto are retrograde for almost as much time as they're not (so much more subtle).
Mars is a personal planet (with the Sun, Moon, Mercury, and Venus), and personal planets have energy we feel more personally. This makes their retrograde much stronger in our lives. Mars rules our energy and drive, what makes us take action and how we do so. Mars retrograde tends to bring out frustration and annoyance, impulsive behavior and impatience, and we can see a surge in fights. Mars Retrograde in Leo & Cancer 2024-2025 Dates:
Mars Retrograde in Leo & Cancer Effects:
Mars retrograde can trigger a lot of aggravation and frustration, but we have a hard time doing anything with it. It festers and grows until it blows, and we lash out irrationally. We then regret it afterward, but it's too late. Which means it's better to work on it in healthy ways as it comes rather than bottling up and waiting for the explosion.
This retrograde begins in Leo, and this is likely going to make us extra selfish and egotistical. We're wrapped up in our own drama, and we spill that drama out everywhere else. We can be drama queens, high maintenance, and extra needy. We're desperate for praise and adoration, and want to fill up the holes in our hearts in any way possible, but this is obviously a very bad thing to do. Instead, we need to focus on reconnecting with our hearts, getting to the core issues that led us to feel this way, and work on better understanding and releasing. Old love wounds can be more prominent, and it's up to us if we're going to use that as an excuse for bad behavior, or finally work through. This retrograde is excellent for creativity, so creative projects, ventures, and hobbies can be the right way to go for healthy outlets for frustration and high emotion. Channel that part of you into something creative, and let it become motivation and inspiration. If you have children, they're likely to be more rebellious while Mars is retrograde in Leo, the sign of your kids. Mars retrogrades back to Cancer on January 6th, and spends the rest of the retrograde in this water sign. Cancer is the sign of emotion, so Mars retrograde in Cancer is likely going to make us extra subjective, too wrapped up in our emotions, and we can blow up in emotional outbursts. Our internal foundations can be shaky, and we can have a hard time self-regulating. The healthy outlets become even more important so we don't let our emotions get the better of us. If we're feeling triggered, this is likely a sign of something that we've shoved away or that impacted us at our core that needs to be addressed. retrogrades love to highlight what we've been ignoring, whether consciously or subconsciously, and force us to work it out. Tap into those emotions, and see what you find underneath. In the world, we may see more hostilities between people in their own countries/homes, and we may see a big act of violence (especially with the January Full Moon in Cancer, or when Mars first retrogrades into Cancer). While retrograde in Cancer, this can be helpful for reconnecting with family or with those you think of as family, with revisiting somewhere you've lived before or someone you lived with before, or making improvements to your home or living situation. This is because Cancer rules the home and family. Cancer is the bottom of the Zodiac, so we can also get back to basics, get back to our roots, and restore the foundation of something in our lives. Some may also be dragged to the bottom or experience a fall (sometimes literally) that drags them down. This is usually as a result of very bad behavior that ends up being revealed. Mars & Mercury Retrogrades:
Mercury is retrograde to start Mars retrograde (begins November 25th), and they overlap until December 15th, when Mercury retrograde ends. Mercury retrograde throws off communication, so we may have a hard time expressing ourselves early in Mars retrograde. It becomes even more important that we have healthy outlets as a way of expressing ourselves.
They are trine, which is a beneficial aspect putting them four signs away in the same element, when Mercury retrograde ends, and this means we're working with the two well. We're finding new ways of expressing ourselves and taking the initiative, and they support one another. Also, since retrogrades rule second chances, this is an amazing period for a second chance. Mars Retrograde in Leo & Cancer Aspects:
During the retrograde in Gemini, Mars will make major aspects to the other transit planets. They are:
December 12th 2024 | Opposite Venus in Aquarius With Venus ruling the people in our lives, we may struggle to get along with this aspect, and we may fight more. We need to keep an open mind - and ears! - and work to be more fair. January 3rd 2025 | Opposite Pluto in Aquarius This can be a fiery aspect that triggers some major aggression and violence; we can't control that in the world, but we can control ourselves, so make sure you've got those healthy outlets ready to go for this aspect as it's likely to bring a ton of frustration. January 12th 2025 | Trine Neptune in Pisces This is excellent for intuition, intuitive insights and understanding things about the past, and we can be more compassionate and empathetic. Be gentle with others and with yourself. January 15th 2025 | Opposite Sun in Capricorn We may feel uncomfortable with something, and this can trigger frustrations. We need to make sure we're taking care of ourselves and seeing things clearly. January 23rd 2025 | Opposite Mercury in Capricorn & Sextile Uranus in Taurus The opposition to Mercury can bring misunderstandings and fights, and we have to work harder at being more open-minded. The trine to Uranus does help with that, and we may need to find different ways of dealing with situations that can be helpful and healthy. January 25th 2025 | Sextile Venus in Pisces This is a beneficial aspect for our dealings with others, and we may reconnect with people from the past, restore commitments in existing relationships, or find better balance. Moons of Mars Retrograde:
There is one Moon to pay attention to with this Mars retrograde and that's the Full Moon on January 13th. It's in Cancer and widely conjunct (aligned with) Mars retrograde. Cancer is the sign of emotions, while Full Moons are times of high emotions, so put it together with Mars retrograde and it's a doozy!
We need to make sure we're tending to our emotional needs and giving ourselves emotional support. We also need to make sure we're not being too subjective, and get a wider perspective on situations. As mentioned, we may see more violence and fighting within countries around the world with this Full Moon; there could also be something with water since Cancer is a water sign and Full Moons link to water. Final Notes:
Mars retrograde will hit one critical degree, 26 degrees Cancer, January 13th - 16th. Critical degrees are special degrees of critical energy, and we may get into extra fights, are frustrated, and want to blow. Emotions run extra high, and this comes with the Full Moon, so we have to work to be less subjective and channel emotions into healthy outlets.
The retrograde begins at 6 degrees Leo, so those of you Lions born July 26th - 31st can feel the start of the retrograde most. The retrograde ends at 17 degrees Cancer, so those of you Crabs born July 6th - 11th can feel the end of the retrograde most. For the rest of you, check the house(s) Mars will be retrograding in your own natal chart, and any aspects Mars will make during its retrograde to your natal planets, to fully understand how it will impact you personally. If you have Mars retrograde in your natal or progressed chart, you may not feel the worst of this. Those individuals generally don't experience the difficulties of the retrograde because it feels more natural to them. Of course, chances are everyone else around them doesn't have the same aspect, so they can still experience difficulties brought on by others.
