A new year is almost here! 2025 has some VERY interesting astrology, and we're in for another powerful year of powerful change. This began with the Capricorn stellium in 2020, and it's going to last until likely 2027. So, we've got a few more years to go, and it only gets much stronger in 2025!
Retrogrades to Start 2025 Slow Things Down
Mars is retrograde, or appearing to move backward, as 2025 kicks off. It's in Leo and moves to Cancer on January 6th, and stays retrograde in Cancer until February 23rd.
But the break is brief as Venus retrograde kicks off March 1st until April 12th, and Mercury retrogrades at the same time March 15th - April 7th. With Mars retrograde to start the year, it might feel like 2025 gets off to a slow start. Jupiter and Uranus are retrograde as well, though they retrograde for months at a time every year. It's a big deal with Mercury, Venus, and Mars retrograde, and they can throw us off. What retrogrades are great for is second chances, so many of us will be focusing on that for the first third of the year. Instead of making resolutions that focus on brand new goals, we can pick back up old goals, old dreams, old ideas, and old plans for another shot. March & April Are the Definition of Wonky
The aforementioned Venus and Mercury retrogrades in March and April occur in roughly the same spot in the Zodiac, starting in mid-Aries and going backward to Pisces. These overlapping retrogrades can trigger some major events in the world and in our lives.
The start of both retrogrades trigger the March 29th Aries Solar Eclipse, so this is definitely a fantastic time for second chances. Solar Eclipses want us to embark on new journeys, so tie that with the retrogrades, and that journey is likely one we tried before or wanted to but did get to start. Then when both Mercury and Venus go back to Pisces, they will conjunct (align with) Neptune at the very end of Pisces, with all 3 anaretic. There are 30 degrees in every Zodiac sign, and 29 degrees in the last degree. This is called the anaretic degree, and it's supercharged energy. Mercury retrograde conjuncts Neptune on March 29th and Venus retrograde conjuncts Neptune on March 27th all at 29 degrees Pisces as Mercury and Venus change signs and Neptune pushes forward to Aries. Holy planets Batman! This is monster energy. We are likely to see a major event in the world; it might be something involving water, poison, chemicals, or that's especially cruel. Not good, I know! On a personal level, look to the house in your natal chart where 29 degrees Pisces falls. The areas of life ruled by this house likely get the focus of the energy. There can be an important ending, something karmic, something creative, something spiritual, or a major letting go. This can be profound and it's likely something we're meant to go through. It might tie into the September 17th 2024 Lunar Eclipse as well, as this was in Pisces and conjunct Neptune. Look to what that eclipse triggered for you to get ideas. Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune ALL Change Signs
And this is likely going to be what makes 2025 such a monster year! We normally would get Jupiter and one other planet changing signs in a year, but to have 4 of the 5 slow planets changing signs, and this comes as Pluto is officially in Aquarius as we go into the year - times, they are a-changin'!
Jupiter enters Cancer on June 9th, and a lovely Cancer New Moon comes shortly afterward on June 25th that is conjunct. This is nice after the Mars retrograde in Cancer might muck things up a bit, and Jupiter comes in to fix things. We can feel more connected to the home and family, make ourselves more comfortable and emotionally supported and secure, and we may see many move, expand their families, or start from the bottom with something, especially around that New Moon. Saturn moves to Aries May 24th - September 1st, and Neptune also moves to Aries March 30th - October 22nd. They've been riding together in Pisces, and this continues for a little while longer in Aries. This can bring more action, and we can be energized to take control, be disciplined, and bring the inner outward. This is a time to make things tangible, and to be an active part in that. Uranus moves to Gemini July 7th - November 7th, putting the planet of change in the sign of the mind. We can think way outside of the box, come up with plans for our futures, embrace the unconventional and experimental, and open up our minds in big ways. This is a great time for learning, teaching, writing, or speaking, particularly about anything future-focused, scientific, charitable, or otherwise ruled by Uranus. There's a LOT of Anaretic Energy
Because Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are all flirting with new signs, this means they spend extra time anaretic in the signs they're ending their dance with. We got a taste of this in 2024 with lots of anaretic Neptune and Pluto; this time, it'll be Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
Anaretic Saturn makes it important for us to be disciplined, responsible, mature, and focus on our plans. We can't cut corners or we'll pay the price so we have to do things the right way, and we have to do them for the right reasons. In Pisces, we're likely dealing with old issues from past lives, have karmic baggage to release, or have to face ways we've become our own worst enemy. Anaretic Uranus can be unpredictable and all over the place, so it's important for us to be flexible and quick on our feet. In Taurus, we're tempted to be stubborn, but this just makes us more frustrated and gets us more stuck. We have to be willing to change the status quo and find confidence and value in who we are. Anaretic Neptune amplifies the foggy energy, and it's important for us to have both strong intuition and to be grounded. We can't let ourselves get too lost in the energy, hence the grounding, and intuition can help us when we're not seeing everything clearly. This is super important paired with Saturn in Pisces, and we can be punished if we don't work with this well. And oh yeah, there's also an anaretic Solar Eclipse in Virgo on September 21st! Spurs us to take action in small ways, with projects and plans, and we have to be detailed, practical, and productive about it. Suggested Reading: The 2025 Yearly Horoscopes
We're moving into 2025! January comes with an emotional Cancer Full Moon and electric Aquarius New Moon. What are they doing for us?
What is a New Moon?
A new moon occurs when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are in the exact same position in the Zodiac (called a conjunction). New moons are related to beginnings, have high energy, and are enthusiastic.
What is a Full Moon?
A full moon occurs when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are in the exact opposite positions in the Zodiac (called an opposition). Full moons are related to endings, culminations, and are emotional energy.
Full Moon in Cancer: January 13th 2025 (5:27PM ET/2:27PM PT)
The Full Moon in Cancer puts the Full Moon in the sign that is naturally ruled by the Moon, Cancer. So, this means the Full Moon is strong when it comes to emotional energy, and we're extra sensitive, and need to work on taking care of our emotional needs. If our emotional needs aren't being met, we can be quick to snap, though we might be more passive-aggressive with Cancer.
Cancer rules the home and family, so we can spend time during the Cancer Full Moon finishing up projects at home or clearing junk out, or we can finalize plans for family gatherings, or work to settle family disputes. We can spend more time with those we think of as family and have a healthy connection to, and we may get more distance from those we don't. This is an important time for emotional support, and we need to make sure we have a solid emotional support system. Without that, and we can feel insecure, uncertain, and get caught up in everything a little too much. This Full Moon is widely conjunct (aligned with) Mars retrograde (appearing to move backward) in Cancer, and sextile (beneficial aspect, 2 signs away) transit (moving) Uranus in Taurus. The conjunction to Mars retrograde is huge as this highlights the challenging retrograde energy, and makes us extra prone to snapping. Mars retrograde can make us more frustrated and aggressive because of it, but we bottle it up until we blow. The Full Moon might be when we blow! We need to watch ourselves and make sure we have healthy outlets for frustrations, and work on getting to the root of the problem. It's likely not anything that we think it is on the surface, and the retrograde is digging up stuff we thought was long buried in the past. The sextile the Uranus does help a bit, and we can be more comfortable with finishing up changes, finalizing plans for our dreams, and being more involved in a group or cause. We can grow closer with some friends that we have a good connection with, and we can be more comfortable showcasing our individuality. This is all helpful since Cancer likes to stick to the comfort zone and doesn't want to challenge too much, but the sextile to Uranus helps with managing anything that does require change, independence, and a focus on the future. If we can just make sure we don't let the conjunction to the Mars retrograde blow it all up! The Full Moon occurs at 24 degrees 0 minutes Cancer. Aspects to the Full Moon are: Conjunction: 22 degrees 0 minutes - 26 degrees 0 minutes Cancer Sextile: 22 degrees 0 minutes - 26 degrees 0 minutes Taurus or Virgo Square: 22 degrees 0 minutes - 26 degrees 0 minutes Aries or Libra Trine: 22 degrees 0 minutes - 26 degrees 0 minutes Scorpio or Pisces Opposition: 22 degrees 0 minutes - 26 degrees 0 minutes Capricorn New Moon in Aquarius: January 29th 2025 (7:36AM ET/4:36AM PT)
The Aquarius New Moon makes us more innovative, inventive, and open to the future. We can think about our dreams for the future, what we hope for, and what we ultimately want to achieve down the line. We can be hopeful, feel inspired, and push for more.
Aquarius is the unconventional sign, so we can push for things to be different, to venture outside of our comfort zones, and to experiment. The status quo isn't working, so doing things differently is something we're open to doing. As we focus on the future and we're open to doing things differently, this helps us also work on change. Change is the way to make the future happen, and we can understand that change can be a good thing. We can be willing to pursue change, and we can take control of it. This New Moon comes with Pluto now in Aquarius, and Mercury enters Aquarius 2 days before the New Moon, and Ceres is still in Aquarius. This highlights the Pluto in Aquarius energy, and we're willing to pursue opportunities to take control and empower ourselves with change and our dreams for the future. With Ceres, we can get support for our dreams as we pursue them and use our resources with the changes we want to make. With Mercury, we can think outside of the box, and utilize our intellect and knowledge. The only problem? Mars is still retrograde for this New Moon, so we do have to keep in mind the Mars retrograde energy that we're still dealing with. The Aquarius New Moon might offer ways to help us navigate better, and the changes we work on might not only help us for the future, but also to get out of some of the frustrations the Mars retrograde is triggering. The New Moon is trine (beneficial aspect, 4 signs away) transit Jupiter in Gemini, and this is super helpful for the New Moon, and there can be opportunities that get us closer to the dreams we want, and we can pursue experiences that are outside of our comfort zone but help us in ways we couldn't even think of. We can benefit from some optimism and keeping an eye on the big picture. The New Moon occurs at 9 degrees 51 minutes Aquarius. The aspects to the New Moon are: Conjunction: 7 degrees 51 minutes - 11 degrees 51 minutes Aquarius Sextile: 7 degrees 51 minutes - 11 degrees 51 minutes Aries or Sagittarius Square: 7 degrees 51 minutes - 11 degrees 51 minutes Taurus or Scorpio Trine: 7 degrees 51 minutes - 11 degrees 51 minutes Gemini or Libra Opposition: 7 degrees 51 minutes - 11 degrees 51 minutes Leo Suggested Reading: The New & Full Moons page for general interpretations by house and aspect
With a new year, many might be looking to move. And yes, you can use astrology for that! There are times when it can be good to move, and times when it might be more challenging. You'll often want to follow the planet Mars, since this is the planet of energy and drive, and whatever Mars is doing tends to be what we're most focused on at the time.
The Moving Areas: The 4th House, Cancer & the Moon
The home and family is ruled by the 4th house, the sign of Cancer, and the planet, the Moon. When this trio is in effect, this can be a time for moving.
You'll want to focus on when you're experiencing positive transit aspects by transit (moving) Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, or Pluto to your natal 4th house cusp, 4th house ruler, Cancer planets, or Moon. Jupiter is actually in Cancer starting June 9th 2025, and spends the rest of 2025 in this sign. This is super auspicious for moving for everyone! But especially if Cancer is your 4th house (Aries Risings), or is your natal Moon or 4th house ruler. Mars is actually retrograde (appearing to move backward) in Cancer January 6th - February 23rd 2025, so this might be a challenging period for moving UNLESS you're moving somewhere you've lived before, or living with someone you've lived with before. This is because retrogrades bring things back and are times of second chances and do overs. Mars is moving forward in Cancer until April 18th 2025, which would normally give better energy for moving somewhere new, but Mercury and Venus will be retrograde in March and April, so not really! If you have to move during these retrogrades, have backup plans, be ready for little things to pop up, and double check everything. There's a Cancer New Moon on June 25th, and this can be a great time for anyone to move. Mercury, Venus, and Mars retrogrades are clear, and Jupiter is in Cancer for this New Moon. Mars & Moving
With Mars being the planet of energy and drive, moving while Mars is in your 4th house of home and family is a great time for it. In 2025, that'll be for the following Rising Signs:
Aries Rising: February 23rd - April 16th (or January 6th - February 23rd if moving somewhere you've lived before or with someone you've lived with before, though this can also apply Feb 23rd - April 16th with the Mercury and Venus retrogrades; somewhere new might be best with the Cancer New Moon in June) Taurus Rising: April 16th - June 17th (or the first half of the year if you've moving somewhere you've lived before or with someone you've lived with before) Gemini Rising: June 17th - August 6th (but Mercury retrogrades July 18th - August 11th, and is your ruler, so this period might show moving somewhere you've lived before or with someone you've lived with before) Cancer Rising: August 6th - September 22nd (except the first few days with Mercury retrograde) Leo Rising: September 22nd - November 4th Virgo Rising: November 4th - December 15th (but Mercury retrogrades November 9th - 29th and is your ruler like Gemini, so you may move somewhere you've lived before or with someone you've lived with before in November) Libra Rising: December 15th to end of year Suggested Reading: All About the Fourth House in Astrology
White Moon Selena has been touring intellectual Gemini, but moves to Cancer in January for almost 7 months. How does this impact us?
What is White Moon Selena in astrology?
White Moon Selena is the perigee of the Moon, so it's the closest point the Moon comes. Selena represents protective energy, benefiting us and shining a light on the path we should take in our lives. This is one of the more helpful points in astrology.
White Moon Selena in Cancer Dates:
General Impact of White Moon Selena in Cancer:
Cancer is the sign of emotions, so White Moon Selena in Cancer can bring some emotional protection. We may have an easier time tending to our emotional needs, and giving emotional support and encouragement.
This is excellent energy for getting to our core, to the root of old issues, especially related to our upbringings, and getting more understanding, making more strides, and feeling more comfortable with working it through. With Cancer ruling the home and family, we may feel more protective over our home environments and with those we think of as family. We may strive to make our homes feel more secure, and we can get protection from family. Cancer also rules our homelands, where we're from, so we may also be more protective of the places we came from and our ancestry. Cancer is the bottom of the Zodiac, so we can have some protection when we're starting from zero, getting back to basics, or getting back to our roots. This can be an auspicious time to start something from the ground up, and the foundation you build can be strong. You can feel intuitively guided toward the right decisions, the information you need, and the people who can help, and your path can feel clear. Toward the end of White Moon Selena in Cancer, Jupiter will also enter Cancer on June 6th 2025. Jupiter is the happy planet of expansion, and this brings some lucky energy. We can feel super protected, though this might be at the core and not something we're all that consciously aware of. It's excellent for opportunities to improve matters at home or with family, for expanding our families, for connecting to our roots, for being confident, and for starting from the bottom. White Moon Selena in Cancer Aspects:
White Moon Selena squares (challenging aspect) transit (moving) Chiron in Aries on July 25th at 27 degrees, and is square when Chiron turns retrograde (appears to move backward) on July 29th until Selena exits Cancer. This is difficult energy as Chiron is the wounded healer and relates to our greatest wounds. We can be extra vulnerable with this aspect, easily hurt, and lack the protection we feel we need to guard our old hurts. This is an important period for focusing on healing though, and we may need to do a better job at being our own projectors instead of looking elsewhere emotionally.
White Moon Selena squares Mercury retrograde in Aries, which starts March 15th (exact March 18th), and is square Venus retrograde in Aries on March 13th at 8 degrees. This is kind of wild! That period is going to be wild in 2025 (brace yourself!), and these aspects might show that we're not all that protected with all the wonkiness either. We might be so thrown that we're completely uncertain of our path, and this causes anxiety, frustration, or getting stuck. We need to take some time to work on issues that are being brought up; these might be subconscious, yet super obvious once we get a real look. It's likely we're all going to be experiencing some major karmic awakenings, spiritual cleansings, and releasing. At the same time, White Moon Selena is trine (beneficial aspect) transit Ceres in Pisces on March 18th. This helps us to at least maintain some degree of confidence, and we can benefit when we ground ourselves thanks to Ceres. This might be the best way to help ourselves during this time. Get grounded! Selena makes no major aspects to Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto while in Cancer. This is interesting! These are the slow-moving planets and relate to the future, our paths and direction, opportunities, and experiences. They're the big ones that bring us all together. But White Moon Selena doesn't touch any of them while in Cancer, so we might have more protection and feel our path is clearer when it comes to the near-term, short-term plans and ideas, and the present.
