Some astrology can be more difficult than others, and when dealing with progressions, there are a few that can be notorious with their challenges. Four that we'll cover are:
- the progressed Moon in Scorpio - the progressed Moon in the natal eighth house - progressed planets in the natal twelfth house - progressed planets turning retrograde or direct What are progressions?
The progressed chart is created by adding one day to your date of birth for every year you’ve been alive to create a new chart reflective of your maturation and growth. This chart can also be used in predictive analysis. Much of progressions isn’t really positive or negative, and simply shows us evolving and aging.
You can create a progressed chart for free on astro.com; add your birth data, and in Extended Chart Selection, select Progressed chart from the dropdown menu, and then generate. It'll show your progressed chart for that exact day. The Progressed Moon in Scorpio or the 8th House
The progressed Moon is the fastest-travelling progressed planet, moving through all 12 signs by the time we’re in our mid-20’s. The most difficult time of his journey during the time the Moon is speeding through the Zodiac is usually when the progressed Moon is in Scorpio or in your natal 8th house.
Scorpio is the natural ruler of the 8th house, so the impact of each is very similar. Scorpio/the 8th house rule the darker side of ourselves, the things we hold deep inside because we’re afraid to face them, and our inner demons, so these transits can bring that out. We may have to confront those fears and inner demons, and go to that space within ourselves where our darkest parts lie. How to conquer the progressed Moon in Scorpio or the 8th house: The first thing you have to do is not fight it. We tend to want to resist because the energy is scary, but we’re experiencing it for a reason. Instead of just letting it happen to you, take some control (another thing ruled by Scorpio/8th house), and willingly focus on issues deep within, the darkness that needs light shone on it, and the demons that need to be slayed. Scorpio and the 8th house are also ruled by Pluto, the planet of transformation, so this is an excellent period for a transformation. Often, a transformation can conquer any of the challenging energy and keep it at bay. If the progressed Moon is in Scorpio, focus on transforming with the natal house the progressed Moon is touring; if the progressed Moon is in the natal eighth house, focus on transforming with the sign the progressed Moon is in. When one of the fast-moving progressed planets (Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars) enters your natal 12th house, this tends to hide the energy associated with that planet. This is because the 12th house is the house of the hidden, and hides whatever enters. If you don’t have any 12th house planets in your natal chart, you can find this particularly difficult since you’re not used to the challenges associated with 12th house energy (misunderstandings, insecurity, worry and doubt, hiding in the shadows, low energy).
How to conquer progressed personal planets in the natal 12th house: 12th house stuff is a great time for turning inward, reflecting, becoming introspective, and digging into your subconscious mind. You can work to gain more understanding of issues, motivations, and desires, and this can help you gain insights into yourself, others, and work on letting go of baggage from the past that has weighed you down. The goal of this is to free you up to be ready to break out once the progressed planet enters your 1st house. You should work to shed as much as you can, and this can be an important time for a big ending in your life. This may seem emotional at the time it occurs, but ultimately paves the way for a big new journey with the first house. When a body appears to be moving backward through the Zodiac, this is called retrograde motion. When the body stops appearing to move backward and goes forward again, this is called turning direct. This can occur in your progressed chart with a progressed planet turning retrograde or direct, and it tends to be pretty significant.
The energy is super strong, and it can last for many years in your life. This can leave you feeling out of balance if you don't get some control of it, and it can be quite unsettling initially as you feel this shifting with whatever the planet rules in your life. When a person has a natal planet that is retrograde, especially Mercury, Venus, or Mars, this has a major impact on their personality and life, and they tend to operate differently than what they'd think is "normal". This can happen sometimes with progressed planets turning retrograde or direct, and the usual way they operate changes to some degree. This can also trigger big developments in a person's life, life-altering occurrences. This can be good or bad, but no matter what, it's big. These can be brand new events; they can also be big second chances. How to conquer progressed planets turning retrograde or direct: First, you need to get some control over this, so try focusing on whatever the planet itself rules, or whatever the sign the planet is in rules, and think about changes you can make or what you can create related to that. Don't be afraid to go big. Second, go with the changes. This is a big shift in your life, and resisting it won't help you, nor will it stop what's happening. Allow yourself to be flexible and to go with the flow of the changes you're experiencing and creating. This is going to be a big issue if you've got a lot of fixed energy, so lots of Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, or Aquarius; but if so, flexibility might be an issue you're meant to work through at this time. And third, make sure to take care of yourself. It's easy to get overwhelmed and let anxiety kick in, and some very well do suffer from mental health issues thanks to this shift of energy, so make sure you're taking care of your mental, emotional, spiritual, and physical needs. One great way astrology can be of benefit to you is to use astrology for improved timing. This means you can follow what the planets are doing to plan out your schedule and make sure you're doing everything you can at the optimal time astrologically and have the planets on your side.
One simple way to do this is using the transit, or moving, Moon. The Moon moves the fastest of all of the Zodiac signs, moving through all of them in under one month. This means you can use the Moon, and the aspects the Moon makes to the other planets, to plan out your schedule. What is an aspect?
An aspect is when two bodies or points are at certain distances from one another in the Zodiac. You see, there are 12 signs in the Zodiac, and each sign is comprised of 30 degrees (and each degree is comprised of 60 minutes). The distances are measured by degree.
There are many aspects, but just 5 are considered “major” aspects: Conjunction - 0 degrees - In the exact same spot - Conjunctions are considered neutral aspects, and when it’s between the transit Moon and another transit planet, the other transit planet’s energy will be amplified. Sextile - 60 degrees - 2 signs apart - Sextiles are considered positive aspects of beneficial energy, where you have the opportunity to make the most of the two planets involved. Square - 90 degrees - 3 signs apart - Squares are considered challenging aspects of internal friction, so the Moon square another transit planet can show difficulty between the two. Trine - 120 degrees - 4 signs apart - Trines are considered positive aspects of beneficial energy, like sextiles, except the energy is easier and more naturally positive. Opposition - 180 degrees - Exactly opposite - Oppositions are considered challenging aspects of external friction, so the Moon opposite another transit planet can show the two energies are in opposition to one another. Since the Moon travels through all 12 signs of the Zodiac in less than a month, it will make all of the aspects to every transit planet every month. This means it’ll touch off the energy of the other planet in a positive way (sextile, trine), difficult way (square, opposition), or amplifying way (conjunction). Aspects the Moon makes to the other transit planets will last up to four hours before and after. See All About Conjunctions in Astrology, All About Sextiles & Trines in Astrology and All About Squares & Oppositions in Astrology for more on aspects. Planning With Lunar Aspects:
You’ll usually want to avoid timing something during a square or opposition between the transit Moon and another transit planet, but especially when the planet the transit Moon is aspecting rules whatever it is you want to do during that time.
For example, if you want to schedule an exam, you don’t want to do it while the transit Moon is square or opposite transit Mercury, ruler of exams, but can aim for when the transit Moon is conjunct, sextile or trine transit Mercury. If you want to plan a first date, you can aim for when the transit Moon is conjunct, sextile, or trine transit Venus, ruler of relationships, but may want to avoid the transit Moon square or opposite Venus. Here are some general rulerships for the planets: Sun - being in the spotlight, hobbies, your children, creativity, fun, love, men in your life, your father, your physical body Moon - your emotions, the home, family, foundations, women in your life, your mother Mercury - the mind, communications, learning, school, young people, writing, documents, short travel (and the methods of), short-term plans, siblings, electronics, small animals Venus - relationships, other people, balance, compromise, negotiation, peace, justice, equality, stability, security, finances Mars - energy, drive, the start, initiative, assertive, competition, confidence, leading Jupiter - expansion, exploration/travel, new experiences, higher learning, teaching, publicity, the law Saturn - career, goals, ambitions, direction, long-term plans, responsibility, mentors, bosses, parents, reality Uranus - change, independence, innovation, originality, friends, groups, hopes, wishes, causes, the future, internet, technology Neptune - endings, subconscious mind, the arts, water, sensitivity (emotional and physical), sleep, fantasy, large animals, empathy, intuition, spirituality, compassion, the past, what’s hidden Pluto - power, control, transformation, research, investigation, strength, the dark side, taboo, sexuality, depth, serious matters Go through the aspects the transit Moon makes to the transit planets and see what will be happening when you want to plan something. If you can’t avoid difficult transit Moon aspects, try to work with it by being flexible and know that you may have to manage some challenges, so avoid stubbornness, impatience, vacillation, or other bad behavior as much as you can to make the energy less difficult. As you become more proficient with astrology, you can graduate from just focusing on aspects, transits, and lunations and move on to other techniques like Returns. One Return that you can focus on every month is a Lunar Return.
What is a Lunar Return?
A return occurs when a transit planet returns to the exact position it was at in the Zodiac when you were born. Lunar Returns are returns of the Moon, and they occur about once every month.
At a glance, you know you’ll experience a Lunar Return when you see the transit Moon is in your Moon sign. You may notice that your emotions are more heightened, yet you can feel more at ease with your emotional self. This is because of your Lunar Return, which impacts you emotionally, and can trigger events, so this is often a period of developments in various areas of life as well. The Lunar Return Chart
You can create a Lunar Return chart for your Lunar Return, and this chart can tell you what your emotional focus may be for the next month, until your next Lunar Return.
The main area of focus is found in the house where the Moon is located in the return chart. This tends to be the area where you’re emotionally focused, and can experience developments in your life that impact you emotionally. You can also express yourself emotionally more like a natal Moon would in that house. Make sure to check out the article, Lunar Return Chart Moon in the Houses. I find that the Lunar Returns with the biggest impact tend to be the ones where the Moon is conjunct, or aligned with, one of the house cusps, which is the very beginning of a house. The sign the Ascendant (1st house cusp) is in can seep a little into your personality while the return chart is in effect, and you can also focus more on the areas of life ruled by the sign. And the house cusp that has Cancer on it, the sign the Moon naturally rules, can also have more emotional focus and attention or developments. Make sure to check out the article, Lunar Return Chart Ascendant, for the Ascendant in the signs. You can create a Lunar Return chart for free using astro.com. Add in your birth data, go to Free Horoscopes > Extended Chart Selection > select Lunar return chart from the dropdown menu, and generate. The Lunar Return chart that is generated will be for your most recent Lunar Return. If you want to create Lunar Return charts for other dates, just change the date on the Extended Chart Selection page to whatever date/month/year you want. Lunar Returns on New and Full Moons
If your Lunar Return occurs on the same day as a New Moon, this means the New Moon occurs in your Lunar Return chart, and you can experience a period that’s favorable for starting something new, and you can be more energized by your emotions and emotionally enthusiastic.
The house location in the return chart for the New Moon tends to show where in your life this can manifest. Even when a New Moon doesn’t occur on your Lunar Return day, but is simply in the same sign as your natal Moon, you can be more positive and emotionally focused on what you want to get going with. This is seen as quite beneficial. If your Lunar Return occurs on the same day as a Full Moon, this means the Full Moon occurs in your Lunar Return chart, and you can experience a period that’s favorable for reaping what you’ve sown. You can experience rewards for hard and smart work and this helps you to feel more fulfilled emotionally, or you can experience setbacks and delays for laziness and irresponsibility, which can make you feel more down and out. The house location in the return chart for the Full Moon tends to show where in your life this can manifest. Full Moons are more emotional anyway, so your emotions can be much stronger and you may need to find an outlet for what you’re feeling, even if you’re feeling good. Even when a Full Moon doesn’t occur on your Lunar Return day, but is simply in the same sign as your natal Moon, you can be more emotional and sensitive. In just a couple of weeks, we'll have our second Solar Eclipse for 2024, and this time it comes in Libra. This is the second Solar Eclipse we've had in Libra as we also had one about one year ago, and we won't have another one again for years.
Eclipses are times of big developments, and Solar Eclipses love big new beginnings, new ventures, new projects, new journeys in life. We tend to see big things getting off of the ground with Solar Eclipses, and this is usually centered around the sign they occur in. Make the most of this Libra Solar Eclipse by following this 6-point checklist: 01: Commit and be healthy.
Libra is the sign of commitment, so focus on existing commitments you already have. This can be with romantic partners, friends or family, work relationships, allies, and more, as well as with projects, plans, ideas, and promises you've committed to.
How well are you holding up your end of the bargain? If you can do better, think about ways you can improve. And if it feels like you're doing all of the work, consider how that came to be, and what you can do to change that, if it really bothers you. Also think about new commitments you can make now. Solar Eclipses love a new beginning, so focus on making a new commitment to a person, project, opportunity, etc. 02: Improve balance as much as you can.
Libra is the sign of balance - it is symbolized by the Scales, after all - so focus on ways you can improve balance in your life as best as you can. We can't achieve perfect balance in all ways, but we can definitely strive to be and do better where and when possible.
Think about your relationships. Which ones seem to be the most out of balance? How can you improve that? Think about projects you're working on. Which would benefit from more balance? Think about personal focuses. Which could use more or less attention? If you've been giving a lot of time and attention to something in your life lately, this might be the right time to take a step back, get some space, and breathe again. If you've been totally ignoring something in your life lately, this might be the right time to make it a priority again. 03: Invest in peace over strife.
Libra is the sign of peace, harmony, and serenity, and wants to keep things nice and calm for all. Libra does NOT rock the boat, and doesn't see the point of that. So, consider what in your life you've been giving over to drama, chaos, and arguments. Why have you done that, and what can you do differently to bring in even just a tiny shred of calm?
Since Libra wants to keep the peace, this sign also rules compromise, and often that is the best way to achieve some calm. It's used as a dirty word sometimes though; good compromise doesn't mean you have to compromise yourself - your values, integrity, self-respect, and self-esteem should always remain intact under healthy compromises. Compromise should also be a two-way [or however many are involved] street. It's not a compromise if you're doing all the work. Everyone gives a little and gets a little when it's done right. 04: Understand a different perspective.
With Libra being the sign of the Scales, justice, and equality, this is the sign that weighs the pros and cons, and wants to understand various perspectives to achieve just the right equilibrium. That wouldn't be possible without understanding other viewpoints.
You don't have to agree with them, but understanding why or how they came to it can help you figure out your own motivations, and better navigate tricky people and situations. Another benefit of this is it can provide you with objectivity, and this helps with all-around decision-making. So, challenge yourself to understand a different view. 05: Surround yourself with beauty.
Libra connects with beauty, and is a sign that wants to be surrounded by beauty. This can be in people, places, objects, or intrinsically. And what is beautiful to you can be different from anyone else, and that's okay.
You may want to splurge on something for your home or office that would bring in some beauty, like a new piece of furniture, or something small like a candle, crystal, or artwork, or perhaps do some painting or wallpapering. For some of you, just cleaning up the area and making it look clear or smell good is what you need to have beauty around you. 06: Connect with yourself.
Libra rules our relationships, but this isn't only with other people - it's with ourselves too. This is a relationship that often gets ignored, yet it's the most important relationship any of us will have, and it's the only one that lasts for our entire lives.
How well do you connect with yourself? Do you show yourself respect and dignity, do you give yourself patience and grace, do you know what you like and don't, do you see both your assets and flaws? When we have a good connection with ourselves, we usually know all of these things. How much time do you spend with just yourself? Humans are social animals, so we can only be alone so much, but we should be able to handle some time with just me, myself, and I. Carve out that time with this eclipse and spend it enjoying your own company. Suggested Reading: The New & Full Moons page for general interpretations in the houses & aspects
October brings with it the second Solar Eclipse of the year in Libra, as well as an energetic Aries Full Moon midmonth. What does this do for us?
What is a Solar Eclipse?
A New Moon occurs when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are in the exact same position in the Zodiac (called a conjunction). New Moons are related to beginnings, have high energy, and are enthusiastic. It's a Solar Eclipse when a New Moon is within 18 1/2 degrees of the Lunar Nodes (the points in the Moon's orbit where the Moon crosses the ecliptic).
What is a Full Moon?
A Full Moon occurs when the transit (moving) Sun and Moon are in the exact opposite positions in the Zodiac (called an opposition). Full Moons are related to endings, culminations, and are emotional energy.
Solar Eclipse in Libra: October 2nd 2024 (2:49PM ET/11:49AM PT)
The Solar Eclipse in Libra is great energy for focusing on our relationships and connections with others. Libra is the sign of the other people in our lives, with Solar Eclipses being great for any new beginnings, we can welcome new people into our lives. With Libra ruling commitment, we can make new commitments to new people, or strengthen existing commitments with loved ones.
Libra rules balance, so the Libra Solar Eclipse provides an opportunity to get balanced. Focus on the areas you haven't had as much time for, and try to give them some attention. Conversely, get a break from the areas that have sucked up all of your time and energy. Getting balanced helps you feel more secure, stable, and comfortable. Libra rules justice, fairness, and equality, so the Libra Solar Eclipse can make this more important to us all. We can get upset if things don't seem fair, and we can work at changing that for the better. This is the second Solar Eclipse in Libra for this eclipse set; eclipses occur in sets of opposing Zodiac signs, and this is part of the Libra-Aries eclipse set. This is the last Libra eclipse for this set as we started the Pisces-Virgo set in September with the Pisces Lunar Eclipse. What is focused on now, the developments that occur, or what we want to start now can tie into the Libra Solar Eclipse from last year, and we may continue on what we already started, or take a chance to do something we didn't get to before. The Solar Eclipse is conjunct (aligned with) transit (moving) Mercury in Libra, and Mercury is the planet of the mind and communication, so this eclipse can be good for talking things over, getting or giving news, learning new information, sharing knowledge, and we can keep busy and active. Last year's Libra Solar Eclipse was also conjunct Mercury, so this gives more credence to the idea that these eclipses tie in together. The Solar Eclipse occurs at 10 degrees 4 minutes Libra. The aspects to the Solar Eclipse are: Conjunction: 5 degrees 4 minutes - 15 degrees 4 minutes Libra Semisextile: 8 degrees 4 minutes - 12 degrees 4 minutes Virgo or Scorpio Sextile: 5 degrees 4 minutes - 15 degrees 4 minutes Leo or Sagittarius Square: 5 degrees 4 minutes - 15 degrees 4 minutes Cancer or Capricorn Trine: 5 degrees 4 minutes - 15 degrees 4 minutes Gemini or Aquarius Quincunx: 8 degrees 4 minutes - 12 degrees 4 minutes Taurus or Pisces Opposition: 5 degrees 4 minutes - 15 degrees 4 minutes Aries Full Moon in Aries: October 17th 2024 (7:26AM ET/4:26AM PT)
The Aries Full Moon charges up our emotions, but for the sake of getting us to take action. Our emotions can motivate us to make decisions, finalize plans, and take the initiative with something. We can feel more willing to do what we need to, and don't want to wait. We can work quickly, so we do have to make sure we're not being impatient and impulsive, otherwise we may create problems.
Aries is a highly energetic sign, so when charged up emotionally, this can mean we're more likely to get into fights, are more argumentative, and quick to lash out when upset. This doesn't help us though, so we have to keep that under control. On the flip side, this can be helpful energy for finding assertive energy that has been lacking. With Aries being the first sign of the Zodiac, and Full Moons being times of endings, this can be a time where we see the end of the beginning, or the beginning of the end, with something in our lives. The Full Moon is square (challenging aspect, 3 signs away) transit Mars in Cancer, and Mars is the natural ruler of Aries, so this does add to the argumentative and quick to fight energy. We have to make sure we're not being hotheads, not rushing to the worst outcomes, and not giving in to violence since this can be violent energy. We have to be smart with our actions and choices. We'd benefit from having healthy outlets for frustration to help keep this under control. The Full Moon occurs at 24 degrees 35 minutes Aries. Aspects to the Full Moon are: Conjunction: 22 degrees 35 minutes - 26 degrees 35 minutes Aries Sextile: 22 degrees 35 minutes - 26 degrees 35 minutes Gemini or Aquarius Square: 22 degrees 35 minutes - 26 degrees 35 minutes Cancer or Capricorn Trine: 22 degrees 35 minutes - 26 degrees 35 minutes Leo or Sagittarius Opposition: 22 degrees 35 minutes - 26 degrees 35 minutes Libra Suggested Reading: The New & Full Moons page for general interpretations by house and aspect
The Moon rules our emotions, so we tend to connect with whatever it's doing strongly. This means you can use the transit Moon to plan out your schedule, and you can get a good idea of how each month plays out by following the transit Moon.
The Transit Moon and the Signs
The transit (moving) Moon is the fastest of the ten planets, zooming through all 12 signs of the Zodiac in less than one month, spending about 2 - 3 days in each sign. When the transit Moon is in a sign, we all feel it in a subtle way.
We tend to be more energized with the Moon in fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius), more emotional with the Moon in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), more think-y with the Moon in air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), and more practical with the Moon in earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn). We can focus on the people in our lives with the Moon in Libra, want more comfort food with the Moon in Taurus or Cancer, feel more ambitious with the Moon in Capricorn, and think big with the Moon in Sagittarius. The Moon is strongest in Cancer, because this is the sign the Moon naturally rules, and secondly in Taurus, which is the sign the Moon is exalted (the sign the Moon is next strongest in). We can all feel more at home with emotion, being nurturing and supportive, and living in our core when the transit Moon is in Cancer or Taurus. The Moon is weakest in the opposite signs of Cancer and Taurus, which are Capricorn and Scorpio, and we can struggle with emotional distance in Capricorn or emotional extremes in Scorpio (not quite the same as in the natal chart, by the way, for those of you who are Capricorn or Scorpio Suns and Moons - so no getting emotional on me!). The Transit Moon and Aspects
As the Moon moves along, it makes aspects to other planets. We feel these in a subtle way too, and when the Moon is at a harsh angle to Mars, we’re more aggressive, or at a nice angle to Venus, we’re more pleasant. Aspects made by the Moon to the other planets tend to be felt right around when they’re exact, plus or minus about four hours.
The Moon also makes aspects to your own natal chart as it moves along through the Zodiac. In less than one month’s time, the Moon will make every aspect to every part of your chart. You can feel the Moon in every way every month. Aspects that occur at night may impact your ability to sleep, especially hard aspects - conjunction, square, opposition - by the transit Moon to your natal Mercury, Mars, Uranus, Neptune, or Pluto. You may be too wired or have too much on your mind to fall asleep or stay asleep, or suffer a nightmare that keeps you up. Aspects that occur during the day can impact how your day goes along. Happy aspects in the morning - especially sextiles and trines by the transit Moon to your Sun, Venus, or Jupiter - can give you a pleasant start to the day. Hard aspects might wake you up grumpy. As the day goes on, your emotional state ebbs and flows with the aspects the transit Moon makes to your natal chart. The Transit Moon and Houses
The Moon also moves through the houses of your natal chart, going through all 12 every month, and spends 2 - 3 days in each of your houses. When The Moon is in a house, it brings emotional focus to that house, and you can be much more invested in the areas of life that house rules.
When the Moon is in your 1st house, this is the start of your personal house cycle, and you often start something new - an idea, project, venture, opportunity - with the Moon in the 1st house. It culminates when the Moon comes to the 10th house, the highest part of your chart, and everything gets wrapped up or comes to an end with the Moon in the 12th house. By the end, with the Moon in your 12th house, you’re usually tired, spent, and need a little break from the demands of life as you prepare for the Moon to re-enter your 1st house, starting the cycle all over again. We’re more comfortable with some Moon signs more than others, and with the Moon in some houses more than others. This usually depends on your own Sun and Moon sign. We tend to like the Moon in the sign of our Sun, or in the same element as our Sun or Moon, or in the house naturally ruled by our Sun or Moon sign. This energy is more natural to us, so we’re more comfortable with it. A lot of people struggle with the transit Moon in their 12th house, unless you have strong Pisces/Neptune/12th house energy naturally (like you’re a Pisces Sun or Moon, have personal planets in the 12th house, or Neptune conjunct a personal planet). The transit Moon in the 1st house can also be tricky for some people because it elevates your emotional state since the 1st house is your outer self, and you can be more outwardly emotional. If you’re a super emotional person naturally (water sign Moon, perhaps), or you’re going through an emotional time, you may find the transit Moon in the 1st house to be very uncomfortable because of that. It’s also good to pay attention to when the Moon is void-of-course, which is when the Moon is not making any more major aspects to the other transit planets until it enters a new sign. As the Moon is in a little bit of limbo, so are we, and it’s usually a time for rest, tying up loose ends, or getting things finished that have already been started instead of starting anything new. You can really hone in your timing with life events and such using the Moon quite well. Even if you pay attention to nothing else, using the Moon can be helpful, and you can use its movements to make your schedule each month. This can especially be helpful if you have no time of birth, and therefore can't create a full natal chart; you can use the transit Moon instead, and follow what it does on its own and to the other planets, and plan according to that.
