There are various types of charts in astrology, but the majority provides positions in the Zodiac for planets (and other bodies) and houses.
As a beginner, you'll focus on natal charts, which provide a snapshot of the location of the planets, other bodies, and houses at the exact moment someone was born and from the location they were born at. The planets and other bodies in astrology also make what is called aspects to one another. There are 360 degrees in astrology, and when two bodies are at certain distances from one another by degree, they form an aspect. Aspects between the planets in your natal chart can impact your life and personality. There are 5 major aspects (conjunction, sextile, square, trine, and opposition). Use the Intro to Astrology Charts article to get started with charts (includes a video walking through creating one using astro.com for free). To get started with aspects, use All About Conjunctions in Astrology, All About Sextiles & Trines in Astrology, and All About Squares & Oppositions in Astrology. As you're going through natal charts, you may also need these articles: Aspects Between the Natal Sun & Moon Mercury Retrograde in the Natal Chart Venus Retrograde in the Natal Chart Prominent Saturn in the Natal Chart Prominent Uranus, Neptune, & Pluto in the Natal Chart Natal Planets Square the Ascendant & Descendant Planets Square the Natal Imum Coeli & Midheaven When You Have Multiple Anaretc Planets Anaretic Natal House Cusps in Astrology And you can also entertain two of the minor aspects, semisextiles and quincunxes (they're more like halfway between major and minor), with the article, All About Semisextiles & Quincunxes in Astrology.
We're moving into a new season soon as the transit (moving) Sun enters air sign Libra on September 22nd 2024 (8:44AM ET/5:44AM PT), and this ushers in autumn!
Fun fact: The seasons are tied to when the transit Sun enters the cardinal signs (Aries = spring; Cancer = summer; Libra - fall; Capricorn = winter). People use astrology without even knowing it! As we go into a new season, stick to this checklist and make the start of fall a great kickoff for the next quarter: 01: Check in with those you care about.
Libra rules our relationships, the people in our lives, and the Sun shines a light on this, so this is a time to reconnect with the people we care about. Make more time for friends, for family, for love, and for connection.
Spend time with someone you haven't had time for lately, and work on strengthening emotional bonds in the connections that could use it. Venus, the natural ruler of Libra, enters Scorpio on the same day, and Scorpio rules intimacy, so we can be more comfortable with forging strong emotional bonds. The Libra and Scorpio combination also shows we're taking our relationships more seriously, and some may decide to make a commitment with this energy. Especially with the Solar Eclipse coming! 02: Maximize the Libra Solar Eclipse.
Less than 2 weeks after the Sun enters Libra, we have a Libra Solar Eclipse! This is the second (we had one last year) and last for some time, so we should work to make the most of the energy while we have it.
Solar Eclipses are amazing times for new beginnings, new projects, new ventures, new chapters, and new journeys in our lives. What we focus on with this eclipse might tie into the one from last year, so whatever we're doing might be a year in the making (or we wanted to start before but aren't getting the chance to until now). In Libra, this can mean we're making a new commitment to a person, project, idea, plan, or goal; we're making a new compromise that finally brings the peace we desire; we're negotiating something that gives us the best terms we can get; or we're forging an alliance that helps us make progress faster. 03: Restore balance.
As we go into the Sun in Libra, we're actually coming out of a Mercury retrograde. Bodies in astrology are called retrograde when they appear to move backward through the Zodiac, and this can throw their energy off. Mercury retrograde is most notorious for throwing off anything and everything!
Mercury retrograde hit in the month of August, and its impact lasts until mid-September, so we're finally coming out of this retrograde period as we head into fall. This means we're more clear-headed, have better focus, and are ready to move forward. This aligns greatly with the Solar Eclipse, and we're ready for a whole new phase, new chapter, new project, or new journey. And it helps us restore balance as we're able to see what needs more of our attention, and give it that attention. 04: Work on getting one big goal finished with Pluto.
For almost all of fall, Pluto, the planet of intensity, passion, and transformation, is anaretic in Capricorn. There are 30 degrees in every Zodiac sign, and 29 degrees is the last degree. This is called the anaretic degree, and it's supercharged energy with the transit planets like this that triggers major developments and activities.
Pluto is almost done with Capricorn, fully leaving November 19th, and is anaretic the whole time until then. This means we have supercharged intensity, passion, and the need for transformation is even stronger, so it can be a good time to focus on even just a small transformation that gives you more power and control. But since Pluto is nearing the end of its time in Capricorn (after more than a decade!), this also means it's a time for endings, to get things finished. With Capricorn ruling goals, this would be the time to finish a goal, to come to the end with a goal you've been working on for some time. You're ready for this, and this can make room for new prospects with Pluto in Aquarius. 05: Play fair.
Libra is the sign of fairness, equality, and justice, and Libras are often the ones who scream about things not being fair as children (says the Libra, ha!). So when the Sun is in Libra, it's important to keep fairness in mind, and to weigh all your options and understand different perspectives.
This gets easier when Mercury is also in Libra, which is September 26th to October 13th. Mercury is the sign of the mind, so Mercury in Libra assist in giving us different viewpoints and see different sides to situations. This helps us to see where we haven't been fair-minded, and where we can do better. By being fairer, this also helps us create more peace and harmony (which Libra also rules).
