When you create your natal chart and learn to read it, one thing you may notice is if you have any planets conjunct the angles. This can be really important! Let's explore why planets conjunct the angles are. What are the angles in astrology?
The angles refer to 4 positions, the Ascendant and Descendant, and the Imum Coeli and Midheaven. Depending on which house system you use, they may also be the 1st house cusp (Ascendant), 7th house cusp (Descendant), 4th house cusp (Imum Coeli), and 10th house cusp (Midheaven).
The Ascendant and Descendant exactly oppose one another in the Zodiac, and are the axis of relationships. They show how you connect with the self (Ascendant) and with others (Descendant). The Ascendant is your outer self, how you come across, while the Descendant is your relationships and the people in your life. The Imum Coeli and Midheaven exactly oppose one another in the Zodiac, and are the axis of foundation, with the Imum Coeli ruling your internal foundation and the Midheaven ruling your external foundation. The emotional and personal, home and family fall under the Imum Coeli, while your goals, life direction, and professional life fall under the Midheaven. The angles represent the 4 big pillars of your life: the self (Ascendant), the home/family (Imum Coeli), others/relationships (Descendant), and career/goals (Midheaven). The angles are also active positions, corresponding to the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn), which are the signs of action. And conjunctions mean the planet is aligned with the angle (within a certain amount of degrees away), and conjunctions are amplified energy. All of this is why natal planets conjunct the angles are so important. What do planets conjunct the angles mean?
Planets conjunct the angles have an elevated position in your life. Planets conjunct the Ascendant can dominate your personality, sometimes even more than your Sun sign. Planets conjunct the Imum Coeli can dominate your home and family life, and are strong indicators of your early life and emotional needs.
Planets conjunct the Descendant can dominate your relationships, and are strong indicators of the kind of people you attract and the kind of relationships you have. Planets conjunct the Midheaven can dominate your career and life goals, and what you strive for in life can be directly tied to those planets, sometimes even more than your Midheaven sign. When you have any planets conjunct the angles, that angle can be more important to you. You can be more concerned with personal development with planets conjunct the Ascendant; more concerned with a solid support system and healthy home life with planets conjunct the Imum Coeli; more concerned with having good relationships and doing more for others with planets conjunct the Descendant; and more concerned with achievement and recognition with planets conjunct the Midheaven. This about what each planet rules. The Sun is your true self; the Moon is your emotional self; Mercury is your mind; Venus is your relationships; Mars is your energy; Jupiter is expansive; Saturn is restrictive; Uranus is unconventional; Neptune is spiritual; and Pluto is transforming. If you have any planets conjunct the angles, pay attention to it! If you're uncertain how it plays out in your life, one clue can be when transit aspects occur to that planet and angle. The planet and angle will experience the same aspects by the transit (moving) planets in close proximity, and that can give you some ideas of how exactly they were together (especially under conjunctions). Your Rising shows how you come across, the way others see you, your external self. The Sun is your internal self, the true you, while the Rising is your face. As we all know, most of us don't come across the way we really are, and astrologically, this is explained by having two different positions. Some people do have the same Sun and Rising - they are the ones more likely to come across as their true self and put their actual selves out there. But even then, it can get muddled depending on planets in the 1st house. When a planet is in your 1st house, it's sometimes called "Rising". That planet in the 1st house impacts how you come across. Sometimes the planet in the 1st house even overtakes the Rising sign, and people will think your Rising sign is the sign that 1st house planet rules rather than the actual Rising sign. This can especially be the case when the planet is conjunct (aligned with) the 1st house cusp (or Ascendant). Planets & the Signs
Let's review which signs the planets rule:
Sun: Leo Moon: Cancer Mercury: Gemini & Virgo Venus: Taurus & Libra Mars: Aries Jupiter: Sagittarius Saturn: Capricorn Uranus: Aquarius Neptune: Pisces Pluto: Scorpio So, if you have any of these planets in your 1st house, the sign that planet rules influences how you come across. It may play with your Rising sign, or it may overtake it. Planets Rising in the 1st house:
The Sun: The Sun Rising in the 1st house means you tend to present who you really are externally since the Sun is your true self. This may be easiest when the Sun and Rising are the same sign, and less so if they're different. With the Sun ruling Leo, you may seem more gregarious, fun-loving, creative, and friendly, no matter your Rising sign.
The Moon: The Moon Rising in the 1st house means you may lead with your emotional foot since the Moon rules your emotions. You can be outwardly emotional, and not hide your feelings very much. You may seem nurturing and supportive, sensitive and encouraging. The Moon is a fluid planet, so you may also go with the ebbs and flows of life, or it may feel like things ebb and flow a lot for you. Mercury: Mercury Rising in the 1st house means you may lead with your mind. You can be more engaging, chatty even, and may seem very intelligent. Mercury rules two signs, Gemini and Virgo, so which may prevail for you depends on the rest of the chart (if it's water/earth heavy, then Virgo; if it's air/fire heavy, then Gemini). Venus: Venus Rising in the 1st house means you may come across as very pleasant, diplomatic, and charming. A 1st house Venus is also usually quite attractive, even if not in a conventional way. Venus rules two signs, Taurus and Libra, so which steps forward for you depends on the rest of the chart (if it's water/earth heavy, then Taurus; if it's air/fire heavy, then Libra). Mars: Mars Rising in the 1st house means you may come across as highly active, on the go, fiery even. You may be very assertive and confident in your views and actions. You're likely very competitive, and want to win. You can be enthusiastic and easily excitable, and others may find you to be a little bit much with how much energy you have at times (rambunctious!). The color red also tends to be important for you (in your coloring, or worn). Jupiter: Jupiter Rising in the 1st house means you may come across as very gregarious, always the optimist, and very easy to get along with. You may be easy going and feel like things will always work out, so why rush or worry? You can seem lucky to others, and your breezy attitude can make it seem like you don't work hard for anything (even if you do). Saturn: Saturn Rising in the 1st house means you may come across as very disciplined, hard-working, and ambitious. You can lead with your professionalism, and you may always be seen as "the adult in the room" (even when young). Others may look to you to take over in challenging situations. You may seem mature beyond your years when young, and youthful when old. Uranus: Uranus Rising in the 1st house means you may come across as eccentric, unconventional, and a rebel. You can present your quirks and differences with pride, and embrace innovations and inventions. You may alter your outward appearance continuously, or opt for something that would be deemed odd for your culture/society. Neptune: Neptune Rising in the 1st house means you may come across as compassionate and helpful. You may seem like someone who is very accommodating, and you can be kind of ethereal. Different people may see different things in you, and may project on you, which can be annoying. You can be seen as a spiritual leader or guru. Neptune also likes to give really pretty or soulful eyes! Pluto: Pluto Rising in the 1st house means you may come across as strong, forceful, and dominant. Others may be intimidated by you, even if they physically tower over you or professionally outrank you. Your stare can be frightening, yet there can be something magnetic about you. You may be hard to take down, and always come back from defeat with lessons learned. Mars spent about 2 months in the sign of Taurus, slowing down movement, and Mars in Gemini picks up steam. We're definitely not slowing down as much with Mars in Gemini! Mars spends about 2 months in each sign, so it comes back to a sign after about 2 years. This means Mars was not in Gemini in 2020, and the last time was March 31st - May 15th 2019. Look back to that period to get an idea of how this energy plays out for you personally.
Mars spent a prolonged period in Aries in 2020 thanks to being retrograde (appearing to move backward) in this sign, and spent almost half of 2020 in Aries. Mars movement into Taurus was welcome after that, helping slow things down and give us a chance to catch our breath. Mars in Gemini is going to last until April 23rd 2021. This gives us nearly 2 months to use the Gemini energy, which helps us to not only come up with new ideas and plans but take action with them. We can pursue opportunities that give us the chance to make ideas something tangible. We can keep our schedules packed, wanting to have plenty to do so we can use up the mental energy we have. Engaging with others can help with that, so we can be more sociable and share what's on our minds. This Mars in Gemini period comes with Jupiter and Saturn in Aquarius, a fellow air sign. This puts them trine, which is a beneficial aspect, so we have the opportunities we want thanks to Jupiter, and the discipline we need thanks to Saturn. Mars in Gemini will also conjunct (align with) the North Node in Gemini on March 23rd 2021, which may propel us forward with ideas and thoughts. We may feel pushed to do so, and there can be discomfort with that, but it ultimately helps us take action in a way that is aligned with our purpose and utilizes our potential. Mars in Gemini will square, which is a hard aspect, Mercury and Neptune in Pisces (Mercury in March 23rd, Neptune on April 9th), and this might disrupt focus. Mercury is the natural ruler of Gemini, so we may have difficulty with managing our mental energy and being focused on what we want. We may lack mental boundaries, and may struggle with understanding. With Neptune, we may see imagination take over and make action a little difficult. A little time off for rest may be needed.
