Currently, there are over 20,000 asteroids in astrology - that's a lot of asteroids! Most of them don't really have any significance, usually just named after the people who discovered them, but there are many that do have astrological significance. Those asteroids help with predictions and analyzing natal charts to understand each of us better.
Asteroids in general help to focus more specifically. The planets have broad impact and cover a lot of ground, but the asteroids are specific and don't have a ton of variation. The Purpose of Asteroids in the Natal Chart
A standard natal chart has the ten planets (minus Earth, including the Sun and Moon), and twelve houses. But you can add any other body to a natal chart and see what it's doing, including the asteroids.
The most important thing to look for with asteroids in the natal chart is any conjunct, or aligned with, one of your natal planets or angles. This is going to make the influence of the asteroid strong with whatever the planet or angle rules. Asteroids conjunct your natal Sun, Moon, or Ascendant can have a lot of influence over your personality since this trio is the basis for who we are. Using Asteroids in Transit
Just like how you can follow the transit, or moving, planets and what they're doing to each other and to your natal chart, you can also follow the transit asteroids. Again, the impact is specific to whatever the asteroid specifically rules, so in that respect, it does make interpreting a bit easier. While there can be many ways for planets to manifest, that's not really the case with asteroids.
You can follow the transit asteroids and what they're doing to each other, and this has influence over all of us at once. You can follow the transit asteroids and the aspects they make to your natal chart, and this has specific influence on just you. Beneficial aspects (sextiles and trines) show whatever the asteroid rules is having a positive impact on you; challenging aspects (squares and oppositions) can show it's having a difficult impact; and conjunctions show it's having a strong impact, whether good or bad. You can also track aspects by the transit planets to your natal asteroids, and they can have similar impact. You can create an ephemeris for any asteroid for free using astro.com; there's a video on Youtube showing you how to do that and read an ephemeris HERE. Using Asteroids in the Composite Chart
The composite chart merges the charts of two or more people to create a new chart that is considered the chart of the relationship between them. The relationship itself is seen as a third party to the relationship, and the composite chart can explain why some people who seem like they should get along don't, or why some people who seem like they shouldn't get along do.
You can add asteroids to the composite chart and see what they're doing to the relationship. Just like with the natal chart, asteroids that are conjunct a composite planet or angle can have a strong influence over the relationship and the way you interact with each other. Using Asteroids in the Progressed Chart
The progressed chart adds one day to your date of birth for every year you've been alive to create a new chart that reflects your maturation and growth as you age. The progressed chart is also used in predictive analysis.
You can follow the progressed asteroids just like you would the planets, and see how they change and impact you. When they change signs or houses, this can change the way they manifest in your life; when they turn retrograde or direct, this can trigger events related to what they rule; and when they make aspects to the natal or progressed planets, this can have an impact similar to a transit aspect. Following the Returns of Asteroids
In astrology, a return occurs when a planet or body returns to the exact same position it was at in the Zodiac when you were born. We follow the returns of the Sun every year (around your birthday), of the Moon every month (roughly every 4 weeks), and Saturn Returns are probably most notorious (occuring in your late 20's-early 30's and signals the painful push into adulthood).
But you can follow the returns of any body, including asteroids! Returns tend to bring attention to whatever the body rules, and there can be important events, developments, decisions, or insights into whatever they rule, and their influence can be heightened in your life during the return. Returns of asteroids that are strong in your natal chart (namely conjunct one of your natal planets or angles) tend to be the strongest asteroid returns you experience. If an asteroid isn't doing much in your natal chart, its return may not be as important, unless it's pairing with other big transits or progressions. Do know you can create a chart for the moment the asteroid returns, just like with any of the planetary returns, and that chart can give clues as to how the return will impact you.
